No matter how "tooled up" I am going into this battle, I get slaughtered. The walkthrough suggested electrical and fire damage, but the big, blue bugger seems immune to all of it! ANy ideas?

An old post of mine on this topic:

I've found that after the obligatory lower resistance, that magicmissile and mordenkainensmissile work really good. Chainlighting is halfway decent as well.

I went with the classic Dragon Fighting Method: Summon lots of fodder to keep the pressure on it, and have some extra meat to protect your fighters. Having a cleric AND a druid shouldn't make summoning a problem. Animate Dead is very good of course. If you summon enough, he will have enough meat to go around and not attack your spellcasters. Memorise all the summoning spells you can (without sacrificing the damage spells ) and summon 6 monsters (preferably animate dead, those last a while usually.) Resummon when one bites it.

Also, I know I found a scroll of protection from acid just before I took on the guardian. Cast that on one of your tanks, it'll help him out a bit.

I did him with the following party:
Paladin, Cleric, Fighter/Ranger, 2 Sorceresses and 1 wizard. Needless to say, having 6 greater boneguards, a buffed up paladin and ranger kept the guardian away from my spellcasters while they kept pummeling him with spells.

my solution is a bit cowardy, but it works if other braver ones dont ;) use the stairs to the temple to go down and heal yourselft (without sleeping or hell heal himself), going out powered, with the wizrd magic sword (cant remember the name..) and attacking the guardian. also magic missiles work

Just a thought, he may have a damage resist. at the very least, be attacking him with an enchanted weapon +1/+2 Geez.. If you still have it, the Moonblade of Selune should do Moderate damage to him.. (He's Acid/Poison Aligned, making him at the very least Not-Good, a holy weapon could hurt him..)

Mordenkainen's sword worked like a dream. My sorcerer got him down to badly wounded while the rest of the party summoned or shot...

OK, get your mage/sorcerer on the podium on which the guardian is summoned, and get the rest of your people next to the Kuldahar portal ready to cheese it. Put on a bunch of protection spells, especially those that hurt opponents with successful attacks, such as fireshields and death armour. Also put on stuff like blur and mirror image. Keep hitting the guardian with magic missile, and lances of disruption, and any attacks it tries on you will be foiled as well as doing damage. As long as you replenish your protections now and again, youll kill him no probs

I heard he has +4 damage reduction. If your fighters don't have +4 or +5 weapons, the smith in Kuldahar sells +4 weapons of every type. Even though he has blind-fight, improved invisibility will make him miss more often. Have your charcters arranged in a circle around him so he can't hit all at once with the acid breath. Chain lighting works well even though he resists 10 damage from it (You must cast lower resistance first). Have your cleric use holy word. He won't resist damage (although you still must cast lower resistance) from magic missle, mordenkainens force missles, and holy smite. If someone is badly injured, move them away from the fight and have them use healing potions for a few rounds. Healing circle will be helpful, so memorize all you can. Summons will help even if only because he attacks them instead of you sometimes.

In Icewind Dale1, "Dispel" was the defense reducing spell.

In Baldur's Gate 2, you had about 3 different ones. Spellstrike, Breech (or Pierce Shield?), and Dispel.

IwD2, for all the hard battles, Lower Resistance and Dispel are two of the most important ones you can cast. Simply because you've got to make a hole to affect him, otherwise your wizard is defensive (haste and whatnot) rather than offensive.

Spread your people out around him, so you know who's being attacked. And always summon on the other side of the monster, away from the summonner, just incase you have to run; there's room to run.

And it should go without even saying; use the highest THAC0 (heh, heh, heh) weapons you have. If you have to summon them, then summon them. You're better off summoning a +5 dagger, than you are a +3 longsword, if it takes +3 or better weapons to hit him.

And, of course, prepare everyone ahead of time. Cast those 12 hour protection spells before you go into combat. If you can get enough people's resistances up to 95% on fire or electricity or cold, then unleash with hard hitting area effect spells and don't sweat it.

I don't know if it's possible to push your resistance above 100% and be healed by damaging spells, but if it is, seriously consider doing it.

Also, keep your AI updates at 30 or below. So you have plenty of time to pause between strikes and movement.

ejsmith: elemental resistance is no longer a percent, rather just a number (if you have fire resistance 10, the first 10 fire damage a round is prevented). Also, the only elemental damage the guardian does is acid.

I've always done it the tedious way.

Buff up one character defensively and make sure this one is impervious to fear - I always use my paladin. Improved invisbility and stoneskin is a must. Stock up on healing potions for this one as well.

I have my paladin hastened and summon the guardian. I go for whatever give me the highest possible AC. The sole purpose of this character is to run around the guardian, distract him and stay alive.

My sorceror casts lower resistance a few times (important) then pummels the guardian with offensive spells. My druid does the same. They hang back a short distance away from the short stairs with the rest. Everyone who isn't spellcasting uses their missles with their best enchantment rating. My cleric removes fear.

I don't go with summons because it's a waste of time - the dragon's acid attack and normal melee attack will quickly destroy them.

I killed him use a mix of spells in my party: Mass Haste, Strenght of the one, Cat's Grace, and Chaotic Comand. In the battle with the bombarder (a agresive spellcaster) attack with Fireballs and Chain lighting and with another spell caster (like a wizard or a bard) Summon Monster and Shades (a lot of Monster and Shades!! :D )
