I'm confused. The cleric's got good alternatives to all those spells. My problem here is not the technical part. It's rather that I need to have a very clear picture of all my individuals in order to enjoy the game. At the moment, The fighter/rogue and the monk step on each others toes all the time - and the monk usually prevails with its enlightened wisdom whereas the rogue is susceptible to both magical and physical damage to a greater extent.

The cleric has become the mother of this party. She knows how to do it all (except the thieving part) and really is the one keeping up the morale in the troup (weird considering her charisma at 6 :) )

Please, give me one more alternative for my fighter 6/rogue 4. If I should continue on this path, should I go for only fighter levels now, or only rogue? Frankly, I think he's good enough to deal with the lockpicking/searching, and at any rate, I send forward my monk when I can't disarm traps - he usually evades most spells.

And lastly... Is there another game anyone could recommend that is similar to this one? I disliked Neverwinter Nights. The game you can't loose - just teleport back when you're injured...

If you give us his stats then maybe we could give you a workable solution. At any rate get him to Fighter[6]/ Rouge[5]. That way you could give him any other class without penalties.

I recommended the Wizard since its the most often multiclass with a few rouge levels. Also it gives you greater flexibility in arcane spells which a sorcerer cant afford. Since he already has 11 levels he wont get that many levels in Normal mode.

If you want to try it, he could gain levels as a Demarch of mask. Since he is the patron for Rouges that can be interesting.

I liked Knights of the Old Republic.
And Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a damned funny game.
They are a bit old. I cant afford new ones.

Or wait for Half Life 2. Whenever that gets released.

Such a wizard would still be delayed in spell progression, as he would reach 18 INT on level 16, while 8 level spells come with wizard level 15.

He already has obtained 11 levels as Human Fighter[6]/Rouge[5].

By the time he gets to Wizard[15] he should have found the school cap (Int +1).
Ofcourse by ECL26, though he gets 6 Stat increases, he has already spent 2 elsewhere by now.
Thus by Wiz[15] his Int should be 14+4+1 = 19. Enough for L9 spells though he only gets L7 spells yet.

    Stats for fighter(7)/Rogue(4):

    * Human, neutral evil
    * Skills are basically all rogue skills (hide/open locks etc). I never really understood what "move silently" is for...
    * Feats: ambidexterity, dirty fighting, dodge, improved critical, lightning reflexes, large sword 3 and flail 2

Turning him into wizard won't allow him to use heavy armor right? Or it will penalize his casting at least. Frankly, I would want a non-arcane person as well in this party, just a feeling. Sorcerer buffs the party with constant "Hope" and also ghost armor occasionally. And Eagles splendor. Those last for so long, so I can use them on a permanent basis.

In order to add in another class, you are going to have to squat him 3 levels so that you don't inquire an xp penalty. Since he's already Fighter 7/Rogue 4, you only choices are:
    1) Continue progressing as Fighter and/or Rogue. Rogues get their best abilities at 10 so maybe add 6 more Rogue levels and then go back to Fighter levels.
    2) Create a new character to replace the existing one. He/she should level up quickly based on where you are at in the game. Also, your other characters will receive more xps from fights as your total party level will be decreased.
    3) Create a new character and use Dale Keeper to bring him/her up to speed (assuming you would give the new character the same number of xp points). If you do this, keep in mind that if you multiclass that you have to add the xps in batches because on level ups you can only choose one class to level in.

Unforunately, your choices are limited because you've already progressed so far.

Now that I'm starting to realize how this works, I'd say it's a real anticlimax. If the characters are at a high level, they gain less xp... It doesn't make sense. Say, if I want to make a party of only 2 people. Naturally they -should- gain many levels - and they really need it to survive. But this system won't allow them to get much further than a party of 6 due to these rules. Makes me sad.

As I want to have fun playing the game, and not just reach high levels, I decided to level up all 4 persons. They jumped up 5 levels. Now I gain almost no xp, so I guess I have to live with them like this for the rest of chap. 5. Did it work the same way in IWD 1? If not, I think I'll switch back and try something funny there instead.

    Oh yeah.
Unless you level squat you aren't gonna get a lot of XP.
And if you do you cant access all those cool spells and abilities.

It really goes too far. My Halforc Fighter[2]/Barbarian[4] stopped getting any XP once she leveled up to Barb[9] killing the Malarites at the dam.

Back in IWD 1 you got the same amount of XP no matter what your level. Soloing was so much more fun.

Best thing to do is save your game before you level up. That way you can tell if your xp is reduced to a size you can't live with. There are points that I have noticed where you can level your characters without losing any xp. I haven't figured them all out yet, but if your total party level is above 6, then you're xp is reduced in Targos. I can't remember what my party levels are currently on the way to the bridge, but I know that I've reached that point again because I was going to level up my Wizard one level and found out I was going to lose xp from fights. I'll check tonight what my total party level is and post it tomorrow.

It would be interesting to see the average level party versus story progression where xp from fights is zero.

    e.g. Prologue - Av. party level > 4 then xp = 0

    I've made that example up.

That way if you choose to level squat, you will know the max level limit regardless the number of members to your party.

Yes maybe. But we shouldn't forget, the aim of playing games is having fun, not to try to fool the xp system. Is this somehow related to D&D 3-rules, or is it specific for this game?

I think they should have based on the number of times you have killed a certain monster. IMO, it seems that the first time you fight a monster, you not sure what it'll do, how it'll attack, the best way to attack, etc. So you should get high xp for the first encounter. But after encountering it numerous times, you get used to it and can better battle it from previous attempts so your xp should be less. That way, muleing or squating doesn't do anything. I don't see either method as a form of cheating because it can actually make the battles more difficult because you're not at your preak performance from squatting or you're having to protect a level one character from every attack in the case of muleing. I do feel jiped because I have chosen to only use three characters and if I advance them every chance I get then I receive less xps because the average level is higher then what the game thinks it should be.

The exp gains are governed by MONCRATES.2DA file. Just download the "double EXP in Insane mode" tweak file (from sorcerers.net) and take a peek into the numbers.

It's a table that lists the exp awards from killing a CR 'x' monster with average level 'y' party. Just note that you need to divide the entries by four. First by two since it's 'double exp' mod and then again with two since table entries are listed with double the actual values, don't ask me why.

That alone isn't much help, since you don't know the CR values of monsters. But here are some values I can remember outright:

    Goblin CR 0.25
    Orc CR 0.5
    Orc Warrior CR1
    Orc Shaman CR2
Troll CR4 (some types have more)
    Ice/Crystal golem CR11
    Iron/Mind golem CR13
Thorasskus/Saablic Tan CR17 (the highest in game)

Monsters in HOF mode have their natural CR increased by 10.

Apart from the very lowest CR values, the exp awards ALWAYS go down if the party's average level rises. For some unknown reason, average party levels between 1-3 give the same EXP awards.

You gotta be kidding me! Those two guys were pushovers.

I thought Pudu, the Twins, Xvim, the Guardian might be candidate for that. But these two?

They have the highest CR rating of all the monsters in the game, do not blame me. I'm just the messenger.

I suppose they're classified as 'extremely dangerous plus extremely strong spellcasters'.. but that doesn't make them good at standing against a party of adventurers since they don't have any pre-casted buffs on them. Whereas the Guardian is pretty strong from the word 'go'...

I've noticed many high level summons are high level just because they can cast spells (i.e. lightning). Unfortunately, they cast these spells even against enemies 100% immune to electricity which makes them less useful as allies.

Anyways, I just finished my second run through. I got my fighter/rogue up to lvl 18, the cleric too. The monk never got any further than lvl 16, and frankly I was somewhat disappointed at that class. Sure, nothing wrong with his saving throws or spell resistance. But he sucked at melee. As a decoy he was good to draw the enemy attention while my spellcasters and the figher used magic and ranged, but I don't think he was worthy after all.

My sorcerer finally got access to the spell "horrid wilting". Now tell me, this spell works against virtually any enemy, including the twins. Why? It's amazing, but it appears not even those with high spell resistance can avoid this spell. Thus I nominate it "best area effect spell of Icewind Dale 2".

Horrid Wilting is not affected by spell resistance. Nor can it be evaded. Only skeletons and ghosts are immune to it.

The only way you can confront it is by putting a mirror imaged person as the target.

Why do you think its a 9th level arcane spell :p

    Tadidas,
What were your stats with him/her? I'm curious because I have a full fledge Deep Gnome Monk in my party. She is currently weilding a two-handed axe since Monk's get Axe feat. In my party of three, she has become quite the killer along with my Human Monk 1/Fighter 2/Druid 6. I've been quite impressed with my Monk so far and I know that she won't become beneficial using fist until late in the game which is fine with me because I like her walking around carrying a big-ol-axe ;)
