Punisher, it's not stupid. I must've put it in another thread before but my reasons were:
-You find a long sword+1 right away
    -elves specialize with it
    -They were common
    -The Equalizer
    Just so ya know ;)
Besides, I can get the Blade of Roses+3 Right away after exposing the slavers at the copper coronet AND get Namarra+2 from that Crypt King. Fairly easy tasks for low levelers ;)
    -Long Sword Proficiencies r0x0r :D

Don´t underestimate **-prof chars like swashbucklers, rangers, paladins and MC fighters/' classes - or the barbarian.

Actually remind how weapon proficiencies actually work. Even grandmastery just give you 3 extra damage, improves speed factor by 1 and improved THACO by 2.

IMHO that´s a nice advantage but not half as decicive as tactics and armor class.

Btw - if you haven´t payed a dc fighter-thief - you will not get bored by playing a monk. Though a bit weak at the start he´ll be formidable later. Kensais however are in my eyes party animals - a friendly mage, cleric or druid will significantly enhance their survivability by casting stone- or ironskin and stuff like that on them ;)

I think a Monk is unstopable in BG Trhone of Bhaal, don't you think?
I mean, he already has a huge percentage of magic resistance, he is immune to a lot of things even normal weapons, though I don't think you'll encounter a lot of those in ToB.
And he has great speed along with already for attacks per round with 1D20 per hit...
I'll leave my own character and begin a monk in ToB.
I know that doesn't sound fair, because you're supposed to continue with your old character, but I made a pretty stupid mistake making him (Gave him Intelligence of 3, which means --> Can't cast protection scrolls and one or two attacks of a mindflayer and he's gone, even while he his a half-orc Barbarian!).
Plus I started a new character in BG2 becasue I wanted to be someone else then the one I played in BG.

[IMG] Monks are unstoppable from about level 15!
But...I usually measure my character's ability by summoning a red dragon to fight with. Yet, only my 17-th. level sorcerer had succeded to kill him in a duel, and the monk...almost!

[IMG] Hmm... maybe I should ditch my evil 3-man game in IWD and reinstall BG2 to play a monk ;) Lotsa people all hyped up about it. Rag, naw. You got a point there that Kensai are just offensive maulers, but I don't cast defensive spells on him, I just send keldorn and misc in to take the damage for him ;) works too...

[IMG] Kensai kit will easily tackle weak to medium foes before he getsa hit. The big bosses could prbobably slaughter a kensai at the level you encounter them first at. But thats why you play in a party so that when one member can't do the job th other 5 can. When i was a third of the way through my kensai had over 400 kills and the no-one (sp) of the other 5 had more than 100 so kensais rule.

I imported my 21st level monk to the beginning of an SoA game....soloing for shits and grins. Some of the encounters could, for other classes, have proven nearly impossible to deal with without resting every ten minutes.

In the temple ruins for example, I ran into 3 lichs in the same hallway. They're going nuts with time stop and all that business, while my monk just sits there, nearly completely magic resistant (put the ring of gaxx on him to up it another 10) and waits for their spell protections to wear off.

Needless to say, it didn't take long to bore my socks off.

A monk's MR stops at 78%, but that's already great and his fists become +4 at lvl 25, so monk is the best.
Why would you get 5 stars in long swords? The best longswords are +3, +4 in ToB I think, you can get 3 or 4 +6 weapon's in ToB, not one of them is a longsword.
    Longswords suck.

If only i had Nobleman to back me up (sigh).

The monk is a waste of time for people who want an easy ride through the game.
    Harsh but true.

Kensai is fun but he is still too good when he attacks.

Barbarian is the best challenge and also the most fun.

Bah thats hardly a helpful attitude. I like my kensai almost wish I hadn't dualed him to thief =). Also monks may be killing machines but it doesn't detract from the fun of the game any to each his or her own I say.
