It's hard to pick one, so I'd rather just make a list:

    The Nameless One
    Jan Jansen
    Sulik (from Fallout 2)
    Morte
    Dak'kon
    Frank Horrigan (from Fallout 2)
    Gordon Freeman

Those are the ones I can think of right now. Two other good (but not great) characters are Vhailor and Tiax.

Bumbling protagonist of the Monkey Island series.

It's been ages since I've played the Curse of Monkey Isle, but the game is a blatant parody of anything involving pirates.

For me it's a tossup between Agent 47 of the hitman series and Sarevok.

Sarevok mostly for his voice, stern demenor and simple kiss-your-assness. Agent 47 for very similar reasons. A tall, thin bald man who'll kill you with a toaster is someone worthy of respect, and he looks damn good in a business suit. Black jacket, black pants, white shirt, red tye, red lining. Stylish and deadly.

Kreia & Dak'kon for all-round characterisation, Morte for comedy value. Garrett for a protagonist, because he's so atypical.

I retire what I said, Kain from Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen is the best. That will probably change with time tho, it always changes.

The guy who reads the story in Diablo. I just love his voice. He acts the judicator in Starcraft, too. A close second is Max Payne with his excellent self irony. :)

Personally I'd go for The Nameless One from Planescape:Torment and Lara Croft. But I think the greatest would be Pacman, Mario and Luigi... even those who didn't play those games still knows who they are.
