[IMG] I liked "On a Pale Horse" by Piers Anthony, and even the second book in that series (With an Hourglass...?) Incarnations of Immortality (or something like that) is the series title. In the first, the main character has the role of Death, in the second, Time. Best of all time? Maybe not... but truly interesing and well written fantasies.

Heinlein wrote a great story called "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag". There are other stories in that collection which are of similar quality.

My answer through roughly my 25th year would have been LOTR. Quite frankly, I re-read it recently and it seemed a little, well, "less" than I remembered. I think the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny (the first set, not the second) were awesome and held up much better to a re-read.

Honorable mention - Donaldson's Thomas Covenant books, Feist's Riftwar books, Kay's Fionavar Tapestry, Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame books, Cook's Black Company books, Brust's Jhereg series, and, if in the right mood, Eddings' Belgariad books (they can wear on you after a while, though).

I have fond memories of children's books as well, which may or may not apply: Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Patricia McKillip's Riddle of Stars books.

Up til now I must answer a Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, it knocks out any other book I have ever read, fantasy or not. The only thing that comes close are Ender's Game and it is a sci-fi book. I just hope Martin can keep the good work up.

I agree - Songs of Ice and Fire are hands down the best fantasy books I have read yet (yes, even over LOTR!!)

I just finished reading A Game of Thrones from the series a Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin, and it is, if not the best, then at least one of the best fantasy books I've ever read. Unfortunately they don't have the rest of the books in the library here, and I dont have money to buy them. Oh well, it's soon christmas... ;)

I'll second the Chronicles of Amber. A great book...though originally 10 books. Oh well. It's available in one volume now, thus qualifying for this post.
