Have you read the Lord of the ring books? Which one's your favourite and what do you think about the movies?
I think the return of the king is the best book since that's the book where all the good stuff happens, or possibly the second book’s end.

ye, ye, right, But nothing HAPPENS in the first part of the book and in the last part they just walk, and walk and walk. Except for Boromir of course who dies. Sad thing, I liked him too.

But, I FANCY him. And Sean Bean as well. Movie was good, but I hated ARWEN. She must die. What a *****. She does not deserve Aragorn, Boromir does. And yes, I am a Aragorn/Boromir slash-junkie type person.

I've always liked Fellowship best. You know what they say, "The journey's the thing". It had such great scenes too like Moria, Galadriel, Boromir, Strider, etc. Return of the King was rather sad. Bittersweet, ya know? The way they sang about the western sea and returning home and stuff. It was the end of an age and the parting of the Fellowship.

I liked all three books, they had their slow points (all books do) but it was a good story through and through and definitely dark enough for someone like me.
I think the movies will be a good translation of the books in to medai that all people can appreciate. I realize that I'm a fanatic of the books and really get in to the background of the characters from the story but this had made me realize that not all people aren't like this. In fact, most people probably aren't like this so the movie is the means to get people to understand that LoTR is a truly epic story with kind of a twist for an ending.

    The Two Towers.

The story gets a little bit more interesting and new characters are brought in to the fray.

The Fellowship of the Ring has the best story, but it's the most boring of the 3. The Return of the King on the other hand is nothing but the defeat of the evil... there's not much exciting there anymore, so I don't like that much either. Two Towers on the other hand are in between and pretty much has the best sides of both, so that's where my vote goes.

Anyway, Lord of the Rings is not what I'd call one of the most pleasant books to read. Often it clings to things that are at the time quite uninteresting. It's unique precisely because no matter how many times you read it, you only understand the full meaning of what you have read (and it seems you never understand all that you're reading but there's always something new waiting for the next time) only after you've finished all of the books. Strange.

I voted for Return of the King as it a definate conclusion with the elves leaving Middle Earth, none of this half ****ed crap about the hero jumping up for another adventure. Also the siege of Gondor was rather brilliant

Did you know that Tolkien was against splitting the book into three parts?

I like the Two Towers, mainly because I really liked the siege of Helms Deep when Legolas and Gimli have a competition on who can slay the most orcs.

Yeah, I wonder how that'll be seen in the film. I liked that one as well. As for the "did you know that...", no thank you. I've had enough of the know-it-all types who think that watching one Extended Edition DVD of the FoTR will make them Tolkien experts (don't take it personally, I've just bumped into these quite a lot). I do have the DVD, though I think it should'be focused more on Tolkien to begin with. I'm not a patriot, but IMO at least mentioning the Finnish national epic Kalevala (which was perhaps the greatest of works that inspired Tolkien in his own) would have been the proper thing to do, among other things.

Fellowship of the Ring. Shire, Rivendell, Tom Bombadil, Moria, Lorien... as Reislied said.

Forashi, if I recall correctly quenya is based on finnish (hyvä suomi! oops, I forgot... only english :D ). Do you (or anyone else) have any more information about this?

Harpell(?): I'm no specialist in LoTR myself either so can't tell for sure. All I know is that many of the characters among other things in LoTR have been almost directly taken from Kalevala (for example, The One Ring = Sampo [according to common interpretation at least], as Finns should know). Still fans note, I would NEVER claim that Tolkien copied his masterpiece from us. He just used it as a base intermediary for many of the ideas used in LoTR.

[IMG] This seems rather moot to me becouse Tolkien wrote them all as ONE book. It was the Pub. co. that split them into three books

FoTR had Tom Bombadil, who is my favorite character in LoTR.

But there is that one line in Return of the King that cannot help you but give chills when you picture the scenario in your mind.

As the King of the Nazgul has broken into the city of Minis Tirith, the future of the free peoples of Middle Earth looks to be at an end. (Quote with spoiliers)
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know death when you see it? Die now, and curse in vain!". And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.

Gandalh did not move. And in that moment, away behind in some courtyard in the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, reckoning nothing of wizardy or war, welcoming only the morning in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, that is great. *leans back and enters the world of Middle-earth in a sense of euphoria* :-D

    I couldn't chose. Sorry.

I find that different parts of the book stir me whenever I read it. First time I found the Old Forest and Fangorn / Ent parts very slow. Now I read them and greet them like long lost friends.

Love the whole story, so picking one book I'm afraid I can't do. Can't even pick a favourite part, as it seems to change every time.

I'm with Viking. It is impossible for me to choose one book. The whole story is great. I'll call it a tie.
