Why do you love fantasy books?

I just love them thats why

 

Hm, they fascinate me, I love the characters, I hate John Grisham, I also hate Stephen King, Entreri and Jarlaxle rule! Elminster is a cool sucker, you can kill gods, enter hell, get out of hell, enter nirvana, get out of nirvana, Drizzt's scimitars are cool, I wish ı had pet like Guenhwywar or Jeggred, I wish I had a woman like Laeral [or just an elf woman goes here], I love Dragonlance saga, Boromir rules ! , Valas Hune is cool, Quenthel is a weirdo along with Pharaun, Mike Portnoy rules (wtf?), I wish i had a katana with Aegis-Fang's ability, and many more reasons...

Because all those things aren't to be found in real life, so for me it's a way out of the boring life which is mine.

They are just...great. They are too cool to describe.

 

I think I like fantasy books for the escape.They are not based on real places,or people,so they give you a chance to just relax and go to anther world for a while.

 

I also love fantasy books, you can dream away with that kind of books that's why I just love them.

 

I tottaly agree with Khelben, Apeman and Dorion Blackstar. Fantasy books are an escape from evryday life.

 

I really like them,because it's something completly different from real live.You can dream about it,although you know that nothing they say is true.

 

That's an interesting assessment, Sephirot, because the fantasy/SF books I like best are the ones with a plot that COULD have happened in any setting, the author just happened to choose a magic- or technology-oriented place and time. I like fantasy and magic to be integral to the story but not for the plot to be completely dependent upon the. Personally, I think that's a big part of why so many fantasy movies fail - the plots are just too ridiculous to be swallowed by the general audience.

Therefore, the fantasy plots that work best for me are the grand sweeping, romantic, timeless tales of heroism. There's so little that's grand or romantic about everyday life, I like to read about such things happening to other people.

 

What I find the most compelling is the complete lack of constraints placed on the author. They can literally create an entire world, and fashion it in whatever image they choose.

Want a Celtic setting with magic and elves? Boom! and Deverry is born.

Want a European style world with mages living amongst us? Boom! Enter Randland.

[Before I get flamed, note that I am simplifying for the sake of effect. I am fully aware that these worlds are nowhere near as simple as that.]

It is often fascinating to watch some of the more imaginative authors create their own worlds, and then develop the plot without the benefit of prior experience in that world. All of the species (assuming they go beyond just humans) must be defined, their attitudes and attributes developed, and their relations with other species carefully mapped out.

When an author allows the world he has created to dictate its own interactions by staying within his own, self-created boundaries, truly amazing things can happen.
