Books you didn't like or couldn't finish

Wheel of Time book 9. I struggled but just couldn't make myself read any further.

No big problem. The series itself stopped several books back.

 

For entertainment, the only book I've ever not finished is the Silmarillion, and that's probly because I was like 10 or 11 when I tried reading it, and I couldn't absorb the first chapter at all, though I really want to pick it up sometime in the near future to finally read it. In case anyone questions my ability to successfully read it this time through, I should warn you that I've since read 6 of the History of Middle Earth books (edited by Chris Tolkien) with absolutely no trouble (I've yet to finish the series simply because I haven't bought the last 6 yet).

EDIT: Oh yeah, Khazraj's post reminded me that I've only actually finished 3 books this year (for university), which includes one textbook, out of the 15 or so I had to buy...

I didn't overly like Cornwell's Stonehenge.

Haven't finished the Silmarillion, but that's time, more so than interst.

I read Orwell's 1984 in high school and understood very little. I couldn't finish it last year, not only was the style garbage, it's too "trite" and stereotypical.

Heaps of textbooks from university that I can barely remember the titles of...

 

Jack Funk mentioned Stranger in a Strange Land, by Heinlen. I totally agree, that book is AWFUL. It starts out sort of interesting, then slowly gets dumber... and dumber... and dumber. I kept thinking "he's not really saying this. He can't really believe this. Has the author ever actually met a woman? Has he ever actually met a PERSON?" The stupidest book I have ever finished in my life. I think reading it adversely affected my IQ.

 

Wheel of Time Book10 by Robert Jordan. When I realized it was more of the same junk, I threw it into the corner.
Foundation by Isaac Asimov. I got to halfway through this book, and still the story (if there is any) didn't interest me.

LOL! Well said, Tal...If ever there was an apt description of El in Hell, that'd be it! -- TORTURE. I literally groaned with every turn of the page....and the repeated dialogue from that demon. Over and over and over - the same words for hundreds of pages, ad nauseum. The only redeeming thing about that book was it's cover -- one of the best I've ever seen.

 

Count me among the people who couldn't finish the Silmarillion, couldn't really get into it.

 

Tal. That being the case, what age group do you think that the authors were attempting to aim for?

 

You know Tal that must have been the 20th post I see of you where you diss (and rightly so) Philip Athans, maybe it's time to let it go and enjoy your posting life a bit more

Anyway I agree with Tal, couldn't finish that book either, and I finished 'Might and Magic the novel'

I can't remember the name but I haven't finished the 5th or 6th sword of truth series. It became so repetative and boring.

A Clash of Kings and Dragon Reborn

 

the darksword series, this series was so bad I wanted to vomit during the middle of the first book. I would have sold the books but I couldnt live with myslef if I put someone else through that much torture so I burned them. That's the ONLY good thing about them.

 

Nearly couldn't finish Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Read it years ago but thought I should read it again cos of the films.
Far too much gaps in the action.
Took me about a year in which time I read the whole Sharpe series, 4 PC text books and a few other books as LOTR was just too slow.

 

I had trouble reading Seneque's (sorry for the spelling..) Letters to Lucilius.
That was in my litterature programme this year along with Mauriac and Rilke and was the only one I really, really couldn't finish : shame on me....

 

Actually, I don't read much, but when I do, I finish everything. I am currently readin three books in the same time, so it takes a lot of time finishing.

Baulders Gate book, and in 5th grade I couldnt finish the great hunt, too slow. I read it now, so I dont know if it counts but..

 

Middlemarch: 800 bloody pages of nothing but bloody manners!! *AGH* had to read it in a college lit class and I hated it. Don't get me wrong, I love Victorian literature but Middlemarch? *shutter*

Yeah, I read the BG novel. Then threw it under a train. I don't think the author actually played the game.

 

You'd have been better throwing the author under the train.

I tried and failed to finish all three of the BG books. Sorriest excuse for literature I've ever come across.
