Books based on movies are usually pretty lame, as are books based on a series, especially if it's a series that you like, whereas the reverse is generally opposite - movies and series nbased on books are usually better.

Howver, the 'books based on totally something else' is a bit broad because it could include everything else from the Dictionary to The Bible/Torah/Qu'ran (sp?) to Mein Kampf etc.

 

You say that books based on a film are lame, but when it's a movie you really like (as you said about the serie) then it hasn't got to be lame.

So it really depends on the kind of movie/serie, if you find the book lame or not.

 

I'm a really big fan of the star wars novels that came out. I will admit that ever since bantam lost publishing rights, i.e after start of new jdi order, it went totally crap. Still it's an extremely successful and enjoyable set of books. Also, I quite liked the books based on babylon 5. So you can see, not all are lame.

I got most books of dutch films, it's a shame that the story in the book most of the times differend is then the film

 

I personally like books based on movies, because i have read some really good books based on movies and also vice-versa.

 

Why aren't there any people who like books based on a serie, take for example Lizie McGuire?!

And what kind of books like the people voted for:"Books based on something totally else"?

 

...because books based on a serie are crap?? (and seriously: Lizzie McGuire?)

 

Although I've been known to read books from a series, such as Forgotten Realms, my favorite books are always unique novels. Books that are on their own are always so much more creative.

 

The only "based on" books that I read are ones based on real events. Sometimes a true story can be more amazing than an invented one. Read Touching the Void by Joe Simpson!

 

It's the other way around. Movies are based on books.

You're not totally right, here in holland there are books based on a film and films based on a book.

So you see, it can be both.

I prefer sometimes books based on a film, but books with a story that really happend can be good too (every now and then)

 

Well, friends of the Netherlands, it appears I voted 'series', thinking it referred to series of books based on fantasy settings like Forgotten Realms, which I like the most. Cancel that vote.

Books on series won't be able to support the whole story. You'll have to need 'series' of books to cover it. And that'll take even more work then the actual taping of the series.

The series books have also a reputation of being worse then normal books.

I'd love to see some books made of games as well. Like BG2, that'd be great...

Totally else. I enjoy books based on more or less random scraps of a well-read author's enormous loads of general knowledge spiced with sharp wit, ehanced in specialistic fields as fitting the setting.

 

Do FR books count as books "based on a series"? I figured not...so I voted for "totally else" (or whatever).

Since I read FR exclusively, except for books assigned by profs and stuff...and sometimes the LOTR or those making of the LOTR and Silmarillion books, or whatever (12 books...edited by Christopher Tolkien).

As for books based on movies, I tend to avoid those...especially after my experience with Braveheart. It's one of my favourite movies, but the book was absolutely terrible (Uugh...can't stand Randall Wallace: the ULTIMATE melodramatist).

Although...I have read a few books that were made into movies...LOTR, We Were Soldiers (Once...and Young), and Blackhawk Down. These books are all better than the movies...but still...reading book/movies isn't really my thing. Bleh.
