Firkraag to easy?

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by The Amazing Ooopah, Nov 26, 2000.

  1. [IMG] I've just killed Firkraag with my level 12 party, and I have to say it was pretty easy. I used a completely legit tactic, not greater malison + finger of death, or cloudkill, but just straight arse kicking. All I did was cast all my protective magics like chant, bless, prot. from evil etc. , and I killed him first time, and I only lost Minsc. I don't want to sound like I'm boasting here, but what level did everyone else kill him at?

Wow! You guys are pretty good tactical fighters.

I haven't even attempted a Dragon yet and I'm level 12 or so average for the entire party. I want to take them all down fighting with as little magic as possible.

All these Breach, Pierce Magic, Dispel Magic spells confuse me. I still haven't gotten Breach to work. Everytime I cast it and click on a mage who's magic protections are up, my casters just stand there and do nothing, even though I've clicked on the enemy mage as a target for the spell I'm casting.

During battle I can't right click to read what the spell I want to cast is, and that slows me down and frustrates me even more when I have to look it up in the manual.

Defensive spells though I use a lot! Protection from Fire, Electricity, Chant, Defensive Harmony, Bless, etc are never a problem.

I think what confuses me the most is when an enemy mage has a glowing sphere around him, a red box around him and other spells where character weapons have no effect. I simply don't know what to do in terms of removing them. Like I said above, Breach does nothing as I've casted it many times.

The only time something worked like that was a Dispel Magic against one of the Bounty Hunters in the Planar Prison the other day. No spells effected him, no weapons and my guys were doing no damage. I casted that spell and everything vanished he had around him.

Another reason I've been waiting before going against a dragon were all these posts about them. "Cast Pierce Magic followed by a Dispel Magic then wait 5 seconds and cast Breach and Lower Resistance" or something to that effect.

    So frustrating.

    Syl...

Yeah, I'm with you Syl: I'm more of a hack and slash kinda guy...

The key to these magic battles is to look in the battle text (yeah I know, what a pain) to see what protections the mages have raised. Breach will work through up to 4th or 5th level spell protections, but higher level protections like Spell Turning, Spell Trap and I think even Spell Deflection will stop it, so you have to counter that spell first with Pierce Magic or Ruby Ray of Reversal etc.

I'm sure there are those out there who really love this magic duelling stuff, but I liked the old days when a hail of arrows was all you needed! :)

Heh! Yeah, yeah I know your views on arrows; I happen to enjoy them immensely! :)

Oh and an interesting thing about my Archer at the end - when I checked his favorite weapon I was shocked to see it was the BASTARD SWORD! LOL! I couldn't believe it! I suppose he really enjoyed Jhor the Bleeder after he got it in the Underdark! :D

Oh, one more thing I forgot about magic battles is that if the mage uses some form of invisibility, you can't target him with spells, and any spells already targeted are wasted (and the latter REALLY pisses me off! :) )

    Magical battle tatics
Dispel invisibility to, you know, dispel their invisibility. Breach to cancel their combat protections. Breach only removes protection from weapons, not spells. Then secret word or it's equivalent to remove spell protections and finally hit the bastard with a cloudkill and let you archers pincushion him while your mage continues to dispel all his protectioons.
This applies against mages only though. I prefer cloudkill x 7 against dragons. Hey, i'm a coward and proud of it.

Or you can take the direct route... and just keep hacking at him instead of running... the cloudkill is just a cheap way. im a sorcerer now and i dont have to run even with him...

Nothing like a good magic duel says Sol'Kanar. All the better to fry paladins with!

Huh? You wouldn't get much of a magic duel with a Paladin...

So THAT is why they never seem to try to counter my magical barrage! Oh well, one or two less paladins in the world can't hurt.

Ah, but you wouldn't have to duel. Just fry him with spells before he is able to duel. Gotta say I'm a big magic and hack'n'slash fan. Guess that's why I created a Kensai D Mage.
Anyway, I don't see dragons as very weak. Yeah, I beat Firkrag without loosing a member, but I prepared well. I tried battleing the shadow dragon without getting ready, and man, was that ever a tough fight. Almost beat him to until he cornered my main character. Anyway, the game is as hard as you make it. Up the difficulty before you encounter the dragons, or just don't prep up. The point is any fight in the game can be easy if you are expecting it and prep right. If you want a more challenging battle, make one.

Sylvus: To answer your Breach problems I'd just like to offer up some advice. If you are casting Breach, you probably are wanting to disable some defenses on the mage. The only problem (your problem) is that they are either Misled, Invisible, Shadow Doored, or in some way invisible. Thus you cannot target them with Breach until you cast True Sight or Dispel Invisibility to remove that first. And yes, mages may be complicated, but they are well worth it.

[IMG] Too easy? Too easy as in you can muscle through it blindly like you would do common street thugs and start casting protections during combat?

    I don't think so!
