[IMG] Everybody says that Dragons are the hardest beings in the game to defeat. I do not agree.
I have met 3 dragons in the game and defeated 2 of them, the Shadow dragon and Firkraag. I have a much harder time against many Beholders and Gauths and against Elemental liches(if anyone have a great tactic against these, then reply).
I defeated both the Shadow dragon and Firkraag in the late 6th chapter. I was defeated once by both of them, but then I had my revenge(core rules). I lost Valygar permanently against Firkraag so I decided to take him down again at Normal. If anyone wants the Savegame please reply. After all, it was a quite easy fight.
PS I have heard there is a 4th dragon in the game...where where where???...

    Oh no..you too...
I have a swashbuckler as main character(like that would help  )
He wiels the sword that does double damage against dragons. I spread my group and summoned both a Pit fiend and a Cacofiend.
I used Minsc with a the Heartseeker. Valygar with his family sword, some spells like lower resistance two times and breach offcourse. I got some fine hits with my main character. Firkraag only used his Breat one time and I had som fireprotection...thats about it I think....

i never really had problems with dragons, because they are always alone. I have more problems with the mind flayers and the elder eyes, becayse they always have umar hulks and the beholders have those little guaths or what ever they are. but with a dragon, every one concentrate fire at one thing.

Did you summon the creatures during battle or before the entire party attacked?

I didn't have any problems with the dragons either. Although I went to kill the dragons at a late time in the game, they were too easy. Firkraag was no match, actually the shadow dragon was better. Against the shadow dragon I died one time, while against Firkraag I made it first time through. All I did was summon some elementals, haste, strength potions and some other protection spells I believe. I had MUCH more trouble with the gauths. 3 of them at once were (almost) an impossibility. I was just lucky my main character didn't die. There are indeed four dragons in the game; Firkraag, the shadow dragon, A black dragon and a "normal" dragon just at the end whom you have the chance to kill or not. If you kill him I believe you get the robe of evil archmagi. This last dragon is at the end of the game.

I most certainly agree that Gauths are harder. I have killed two dragons but I have not even cleansed the Beholder lair under Athatkla yet..they are just too hard...fire fire with cause serious wounds and I'm dead.

I let Aeri and Imoen prepare the spells of summon the demons just before I went talking to the dragons. When they go hostile it didnt take long before they were summoned.

Attack from all directions...the Pit fiens succeeded with demon fear and Firkraag went crasy....

[IMG] There are five Dragons in the game, each one with different offense and defense, and each a different challenge. However, I agree that the Dragons are not the toughest fights. You have plenty of time to prepare for Dragons, which makes the fight manageable. The worst fights for me have been enemies that I didn't take seriously enough or wasn't expecting. Like the halflings in the planar sphere, the illithids in the sewers/underdark, and the such. Those are the fights where generally someone/several people die. Dragons are, however, the toughest creature in the game in my opinion.

I think that next to Kangaxx, the Shadow Dragon was the hardest fight (at the time). I faced him when barely in double figures level-wise and he really kicked my arse. Killed us all first time through. Second time killed myself and Jahiera. Third time however we barely got scratched...used a lot more magic to remove protections...and those lovely potions of Storm Giant Strength. Kick-ass.

Kangxx certainly the hardest fight in the game though, in fact all of the Liches are super-difficult. The one in the Shadow Dungeon was a real pain in the butt.

[IMG] I found Firkraag to be the hardest that I killed, I went to Windspear hills pretty much straight away after I started chapter 2, mainly for the money. He just wouldn't die and I even had a THAC0 of 7 at the time and I had to take the difficulty level down to core as well. I didn't kill Kangaxx though, how much XP do you get from him?

Kangaxx gives you a neat 50k if I'm not mistaking.

But aren't we forgetting the Twisted Rune here ? I mean, with a fighter à la Korgan, with an AC if -14 and 4 attacks/round with a THACO of -2, Mind Flayers really aren't that tough (of course, you need Chaotic Commands). Same for single Dragons and Liches, but the Twisted Rune.. battling a Lich, a Beholder (thank Iove it wasn't an Elder Eye), a Mage, a Vampire and a Fighter at the same time really ain't easy you know. But that're just my thoughts of course..

Definitely. That´s exactly why twisted rune is such a damn tough fight. You can´t choose a single proven tactic for there is some kind of a "rainbow-hreat", you have to use all tactics at the same time :)

I did Twisted Rune pretty late in the game, and couldn't believe I managed to do it in the first try, without reloading once or even losing a single NPC!
I just saved my game before it and wanted to quit playing, but entered the area just for fun to see what I'll have to look for later, when I do it "for real".
Anyway, I went in, cast a few protective spells on my NPCs in the lobby, and then proceeded to the main room. Whee, a lich on top of a table. And then his friends, a beholder, a vampire etc.
The pierce shield spell on the lich was the turning point though. After that, it just took another secret word spell and all his defences were down, and Imoen (Daystar) and Minsc took care of him. Valygar and Anomen took care of the beholder in the meanwhile, with some additional spell support from Aerie. She was drained badly by the vampire in the process though, but after we were done with the lich we helped her out.
The fighter and mage there didn't do much damage and were disposed of easily. Only the mage summoned a pit fiend before she went to hell, and mazed it a second later. (For reasons unknown to me). Looked pretty funny, it was gone before it even reached anyone.
Now the problem is, I forget about it and it returned a while later and went straight for Aerie! You can imagine what a pit fiend can do to a normal character, let alone a weak mage who was drained on top of it. Fortunally, the beast only got one shot at Aerie and was beaten to a bloody pulp by everyone before it could score another hit.

After reading so much about it, I thought it'd be much tougher. :D

I was screwing around in BG2 today and decided to whack the Shadow Dragon in one of my saves for fun. I waded into the battle without any spell protection whatsoever and sliced that moron into lizard chunks. :D

I did the nice fights, firekraag, shadow dragon and twisted rune, early in the game at relatively low level before I went to Spellhold to free Imoen.
I don´t wonder why I was so busy with surviving the fight and killing these bloody beasts :D
Fighting later with some of the nice pieces of equipment I found in the underdark it was easier.
