Staff - a Staff of Striking will do the most amount of damage on backstab of any weapon.

[PS: watch now as the spam starts flying bitching about how terrible it is that you can backstab with a staff]

Lol, I understand how you could bonk someone over the head with a club and call it a backstab, but a staff? Maybe you impale them through the back with the medal end?

Well... playing a thief is challenging and if someone is playing a thief he doesn't prolly care if he is a very effective golem killer... I would go for short swords or long swords... blade of the roses is cool. Katanas just don't fit to forgotten realms if you ask me. I hate them all...

Definetely short swords. I cannot imagine backstabbing with a katana, let alone with a staff...

My fav melee weapons for thiefs and backstabbing are still daggers (very good *special effects*) and shortswords. As Marnix mentioned, firetooth is an excellent weapon on golems, earlier you can find the boomerang-dagger which is excellent as well. Other nice ranged weapins for thiefs are the tuigan bow, darts and, tansheron's bow and the light crossbow of speed.

With my soloing dualed Assassin/Mage, I'm using Tuigan +1, and Kudane +2, both adding another attack. This comes in handy when your melee skills ain't the best. I have Tasheron +3 and a Staff Mace +2 in the backpack for golem killing. I'll probably keep Kudane until I get Blackrazor, and keep the Tuigan until I get Gensen's.
