[IMG] I'm currently tearing through the expansions of NWN. When I'm done I know I have all sorts of player created scenerios to also play. That being said I've been looking at TOEE and thinking about getting it to add to my inventory of games to play. I know when the game first came out there was all sorts of problems and the game was considered a disaster. With the latest patches is the game playable? Also how much is the game worth. Looking at E-Bay I'm guessing I can get the game for between $10 and $20 dollars shipped. Should I or should I stay away?

I've been wondering the same thing as well. I am heartened by the fact that there seems to be continuing activity on the ToEE Boards (unlike the Demonstone forums which are as dead as dodo).

Or you could get it from Amazon for $10 and make Tal happy ;)

Yes, it's worth it. Very entertaining combat. It's no Fallout, but it was never intended to be; it's a dungeon crawl with variety. If you approach it expecting that, you'll have a blast. If you expect something more akin to Fallout or PS:T you'll be vastly disapppointed. Frankly, I view it as more of a turn based tactical combat game than anything else.

Just make sure you patch the thing before playing :)

With the full assortment of patches, this game is reaaly good. It could have been great if they level limit was higher than 10. Even with no additional map areas or quests, you should get to level 14. The turn based play, IMO is great. Plot, graphics, playability!! Not too hard, not too easy. Seemingly unlimited character development with multi classing and skill/ feat builds.

I got 100+ hrs of play out of it for my $9.99, so I think it was well worth it.

I really liked the game, it has/had some bugs but none breaked the game for me at least.

I'll just say that the combat is the simply *BEST* combat i have ever seen in any RPG game on any console or computer. Ever since i first played this game i have wanted someone to port all the baldurs gate and icewind dale games over t this engine :)

I found this game for $5 used at one of my local computer stores. Should I buy it?

Definitely, if you have a fast computer (not just the minimum specs) or don't mind huge (and I mean huge) end-of-turn loading periods in combat. It's nowhere near as good as BG2, but it's nice to play, as opposed to many unplayable RPGs on the market.

[IMG] I agree with a lot of the above reviews... It succeeds at being a good turn-based 3.5ed combat engine. Trying different combat tactics in ToEE has greatly improved my Wednesday night (3.5ed) gaming strategies.

It's a good way to play-test 3.5 rules, especially in combat --and the graphics are decent, but although the game is still buggy, I picked mine up for $5.00 over at Big Lots, so for five bucks, I give it a thumbs-up...

I'm resurrecting an ancient thread to declare with glee that I finally finished this game. Yes it took me almost two years, but life (as usually happens) got in the way. If anyone hasn't given this game a shot, I highly recommend it. I used all of the Circle of Eight's mods/patches and had a grand olde time playing. I only had a few crashes to the desktop and most of them were my fault for trying things that their faq said not to do. The mods that they created added a significant amount of enjoyment to the game.

For the record the game probably took me a little more than a month of serious playing. That is determined as around six to ten hours per week.

Two thumbs up and if you can find it in a bargain bin, you will not be disappointed.

I went through the game in around 20 hours actually... I did find it very short. Great game though. Good graphics, limitless character development, non-existing story, and the best tactical combat I've seen in a CRPG. Definitely worth the price you'll find it at nowadays (which will be pretty low)

I love this game! I added all the Co8 mods and it is a blast! I played once with a "good" party and I've made a "bad" party that I want to try the game with.

Tactics are key! There were encounters I wasn't prepared for that were overwhelming, but become more manageable if you plan your moves and magic correctly.

I'll treasure forever, the first time I cast fireball. I wasn't aware that the game took in to account "friendly fire". Boy was Elmo and my fighter pissed at the sorceress.

ToEE is deffinatly worth getting. It's had alot of bad mouthing and rep but it is deffinatly one of my most fun DnD CRPG experiences ever. Trokia will always have a special place in my heart because of it.
It does have alot of bugs and it is quite short (max level 10), but if you can look past that and love DnD, you'll have alot of fun.
That being said I think I'll start playing again (I do so every few months or so).
Alot of people may not agree (I would have no idea on this), but if ToEE had been allowed to be properly ironed out before release and increased in length/scope to, say, a 20 level campaign with on going support and an expansion or two, it would have ranked better than Baldur's Gate II and NWN. But thats just my personal opinion/dream :p

Those changes and also replacing the one super, super long dungeon with a bunch of smaller more interesting locations.

The tactical combat isn't just better than any other rpg, it is light years better.

For $5 you really shouldn't be asking - go and get it :)

I think AMaster describes the game pretty accurately: "a turn based tactical combat game". It's got no story to speak of, no NPCs that will blow you away with their complexity, no dialog trees with endless possibilities. What it does have is the best tactical combat implementation I've seen in a CRPG. This is really the heart of the game. Everything else is mere window dressing. That said, the window dressing is very good - graphics, writing and so on are done very competently. Once you get to the Temple itself there are a lot of interesting things you can do with the elemental sub-temples - helping one against another, killing them all, or playing quadruple agent and turning them all against each other in various combinations. It's all a lot of fun, and can be quite involving actually.

The game was pretty unstable when it was released (although, IMO, not the "disaster" some reviews have made it seem), but the official patches fixed most of the serious issues. With the Co8 mod, I don't think there's any noticeable bug left in there.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice this thread was being revived from so long ago...

[IMG] I know, but I always like to take the opportunity to point out how great the combat engine is.

Pure 3.5 D&D rules gaming. If you know the rules it is a must. This is what we want, second after a new BG.

But still it has bugs even after the patches. Still silly things happen, like a character stuck on a door, or half the party walking trough a locked one. Also at some spots party control is busted.

Once the combat starts you shout: go dice go get me a natural, ... no not a miss
