I'm thinking about getting this feat. Does anyone know if spiked chains do anything special other then look pretty cool. I thought I read somewhere that they trip opponents.

OK, this can be the best weapon in the game, especially if you get the masterwork weapon mod to be able to craft a magic spiked chain. It really should be a reach weapon, but the game doesn't recognize it that way. So you can use it for AoO against close and normally out of reach opponets. And YES, you can use it to trip opponets.

So your attack goes trip attack, bonuses with the SC, so your opponet is down. +4 attack for everyone else aginst the prone opponet. The the guy tries to get up so he can attack you, but wait, rising opponets provoke AoO, so another trip attack and he's down again. Everyone slaps the downed guy, including you for a full attack against him. When he tries to rise again, rinse and repeat.

I had a fighter specialise in SC, skill points in bluff for feints, charge in aginst the BBEG, trip attack, fight over. Scorp went down fast, funny animation of him on the ground, hopping up, then falling again. Got kinda boring after a while, until my druid mad him a shocking burst SC, oohh the destruction.

Ok cool. I am playing the patch3 version right now not the mod pack yet. My fighter has improved trip and is using a Glaive. He is able to hit up close and far away as well as trip at a distance with the Glaive reach weapon. That is probably a game error but he can do it. So a few questions: 1. What bonus does the SC give to tripping? 2. How do i make my AoO a trip attack 3. What distance can i hit with the SC. 3. If i get the feat is it still a two handed weapon? 4. If my glaive can allow my fighter to trip at a distance do i need the chain? 5. what do you mean when you say "It really should be a reach weapon, but the game doesn't recognize it that way." If it can attack at a distance? Thanks for your help.

    1. I believe it is +1, but I may be wrong. Try it with the rolls shown.

2.When your attack turn comes up, on the action wheel, trip attack is one choice.

    3. SC is a 2H weapon anyway, isn't it?

    4. Glaive works the same, but SP should have a longer reach 15ft vs 10ft. It is a known bug/error but all reach weapons can also attack up close with no penalty.

    5.Explained above.

You will need the masterwork weapons patch, I never saw a magic glaive in the game.

If you fail a trip attack, your opponent can try to trip you. If you have a low BAB, then chances are you will fail, and then be tripped yourself. Try it at a higher level, or with a more melee oriented character, or against weaker opponents. It really does work!

I realize this thread is somewhat outdated, but I happened upon it and wanted to add a reply.

The spiked chain is a reach weapon, but one its benefits is that you can also use it to attack opponents that are 5 feet away from you. So you threaten a large number of squares with it. It's this way in D&D 3.5 rules, and was translated correctly into ToEE.
