    Hi,
I've decided to start playing ToEE again, however I am unable. The game used to work 100% fine on my old computer too.. anyway, I have official patches 1 & 2 installed as well as co8 4.0.1 and 5.0.0 and when I try to create a character, the game just hangs when I get up to the portrait part. It dosn't matter which version of co8 that I use from the front end, or if I use the normal version of ToEE..
(Also theres a problem of when I exit the game, the screen goes black with multicolored lines and stays that way, forcing me to reset, but thats not nearly as important).

    What can I do?

    EDIT:

Ok, did a bit more playing. Apparently the co8 5.0.0 mod was the problem. 4 works fine.
As for the problem with having to reset after exiting the game due to a screwed up screen, using the windowed mode option in the front end fixes it but.... the window it plays in is pretty tiny and it wont let me maximize/resize, so.. is there something I can change to make the window bigger?

Have you tried adjusting the resolution of the game?

If you haven't already, it might be worth your while to try a completely clean install. Uninstall everything, and rename your ToEE folder to ensure that your new install is completely fresh. Pay very close attention to the install order recommended on the Co8 boards, and if you feel Co8 5.0.0 (which I haven't tried myself, haven't played this game for well over a year) is what's causing your problem, then just skip it.

I think the problem here is that the OP is using a very early build of the Co8 v5 beta which was put up in the Co8 mod forum for testing. The issue was solved within a few hours of the beta being released (it was an issue with some portraits for some kobolds).

The public release of Co8 v5 is now available. I'd strongly suggest downloading that :)

edit: I've just noticed that sorcerers.net has the beta version of v5 in the Co8 mod section. Might be an idea if that got taken down and replaced by the proper public release version as it might cause a lot of unnecessary support issues :)

Heh.. I got the sorcerer's palace one.. >_>
    Thanks for the tip.
As for a clean install to fix the screwed up screen, I doubt it will do much good. This was a clean install and it had the same problem without patches, with official patches and then with the co8 packs, so I dunno..
It might be a problem specific to my computer, but its pretty damned annoying that I will have to reset every time I finish playing :/

I'm sorry Riden but I can't really help with your system specific problem without more details about your system and how it is set up.

Interesting that windowed mode solves the issue - stupid question, but have you tried different resolutions within a non-windowed game?

Yes.. but I don't see what that would have to do with exiting the game..
It was at something like 800x600 res when I first installed and I changed it to max res.

    Edit:

    Heheheh..
Well I've been changing res's in game and exiting, still has the problem, but... I've found the silliest work around ever ;x
I wrote down the exact, shortest key stroke combo to open up the start menu, navigate to the FarCar executable shortcut and run it (as its the only game I have cracked to run without a cd) and sure enough it runs fine and clears the screen for me so all I need to do is exit back out to the desktop ;p

Are you running the most up to date driver for your video card? And by the way, what kind of card are you running (and more to the point, what are your system specs?).

I updated a few weeks ago, so I believe so but I'll check anyway.
    As for specs:
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
    ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
    ASUS GeForce 7900GTX
    Creative X-FI Xtream Music
2GB Ram (forgot the brand.. kingston or kingmax or something I believe though)
    Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2 7200.9

    Hmm.. am I missing anything?

Thank you Taluntain :) I shall click some more ads to thank you a bit more.

Riden - I'll have a poke about for information on your system which might explain the screen glitches. The reason I suggested resolution was that I wanted to rule out your monitor :)

Ah, well thanks for all your help :)
It's playable enough for me to enjoy this great game again though.

Quite enjoying the party I made too.. not the usual type of party I make either.
A low Int, high Cha dual Bastard Swords Fighter/Paladin (some of the things he says are hilarious!). A high Wis, med Str Cleric with a Long Spear and combat feats like Power Attack/Cleave etc. An Elven Fighter specializing in Long Bows and taking all the bow feats. An Elven Rogue/Wizard with high Dex and Int and reasonable Str taking theif skills and item creation feats (I quite like this guy, I gave him a Long Bow and the Radiant Longsword from the Meleny marrige quest with the Quick Draw feat, he's extreamly versitle :D ) and a Sorcerer (my fav class).
Some of the new/edited encounters and quests from the Co8 pack are a really nice surprise and quite well done!
I just cleared the Moathouse and went out the back way to find those mecenaries from the Inn and a whole lot of normal soldiers to fight with, caught me off-guard but thoroughly enjoyable.

Well, I can't find anything obvious about your system specs that would be causing this problem. Have you always had this problem on this particular system?

It sounds like you have a work around; however, reinstalling your video driver probably isn't a bad idea. I'm inclined to believe that the problem is video related in some way. Also, make sure to shut off any unnecessary apps you may have running (antivirus, personal firewalls, etc), at least for troubleshooting purposes. A full virus scan/ad-ware scan isn't a bad idea either.

Are you doing anything funky from an OS perspective (e.g. running multiple OSes through VM-ware)? And btw, what OS and service pack do you have installed?

If you have access to another video card, you might try swapping it out. If you still have the problem with another video card, you know there's something else going on with your system. If you don't, then you know that it's a video related issue.

I assume that you're not having this kind of problem with any other applications?

Anyhow, a few extra things for you to look at/try out at least...

    Good luck!

I have never installed ToEE on this system before now, its only a few months old.
As for scans, I'm always making sure my system is squeaky clean :)
And as for swapping in a new video card; don't have one to swap and I don't think its worth doing something so drastic, especially since I have no other problems and I know my card is solid.
Theres just something about my system that ToEE dosn't like :| I've got no other problems with it though (other than findout out that the many shot feat dosn't work :( ).
Oh and I'm running win xp pro, all updated (sp2 etc).
Thanks for your help though. Reinstalling the video driver might be a nice idea, but it dosn't seem worth it at this stage.

You're using the latest nvidia drivers aren't you?

They seem to cause problems on a lot of games.
Possibly downgrade to an older version or use one of the unofficial alternatives.

Yea I'm using the latest.. though haven't encountered any problems with any of the other games that I'm playing off and on (Titan Quest, Oblivion, FarCry, HoMM5, Vampire Bloodlines etc..).
I'll keep that in mind though if I do, thanks.
