Torment vs. Baldur's Gate

I bought Torment when out looking for Baldurs Gate (with tosc). I had first played it over a serial link with my friend for a whole day and most of the night.

I bought Baldurs Gate recently, and was saddened by the fact that it was quite boring. i played up to the Nashkel Mines, but i cannot bring myself to play any further.

Is there something wrong with me, that i can't bring myself to play a game loved by the many and despised only by the very few?

 

Yes there is something very wrong with you.

 

Take a break and try it again. Perhaps you should consider new party members, or using multiplayer to create your own.

Maybe your just someone who can't appreciate a game that revived the practically dead computer rpg genre.

 

You like Torment? I guess that's the problem. BG is good, but not nearly as good as PT. Some dislike BG because there are too much talk and not enough combat. Some dislike it because there are too much combat and not enough role-playing. I guess you belong to the last category.

 

IS this commercialisement for Torment? On a BG1 Forum?

If not Advantages, the diversities in BG1 next to Planescape:

You can't really mess anything up in BG1. Gives You a relief over Torment, where You have to be allert all the time.

easier Charactergeneration. Dont have to roleplay to get ahead, like torment.

A natural environment and natural friends (next to earth)

I was done I think. It feels so nice to state the obvious.

Don't be sad If You don't like BG1. Life brings more CRPG that that. Believe me. OR play PnP. If You like the roleplaying aspect.

 

In my opinion torment is the better Roleplaying game because bg 1 did have some rather pointless killing e.g runnnig around a field killing kobolds for no apparent reason other than the fact that on a dice roll of watever they will yield(sp) some gp.
In torment money and experience is ripe plus it has easily got the better story line.

That was a low blow Lazy Bonzo. In Torment is a similar experience. The Hive Thugs. No other purpose but to Yield xp and money.

The Kobolds are part of the BG1 environment and the Hive thugs are part of the Torment environment.

 

Mr Bonzo you must admitt that the kobolds do attack you, not the other way round. it is sorta part of the game to wander around and be attacked :/

 

Not entirely true since every kobold attacks you but not every hive thug attacks you on sight only every so often or when you look weak. It is easier to level up by doing quests in torment rather than simply running around killing everything on site as in bg1.

I accept that ankhegs should be killed.

Also in torment there is a quest which is completeable by talking to thugs with no conflict for more exp than simply killing them bg1 style.

Note: I am dissing bg1 not bg2 which was a better game (which is good since it was a sequel).

Enough of this Kobold Thug pickering. Is Kobolds/Hive thug the essence of the two games? nay. Then why treat these minor encounters as important?

Bg1 is an easy to go on entertainment game and Torment is (or can be) for a more mature (experienced) roleplayer. Happy?

 

I played Torment first too, and I was also initially disappointed. However, once I got into BG I forgot about the relatively slow level advancement and lack of role-playing aspects and started appreciating the greater PC/NPC diversity and need for more complex combat tactics created by lower levels, less powerful equipment and a further-out perspective. Both are great games that are enjoyable in very different ways

 

I agree with Will, the whole being weak as all get out thing calls for strategy and tactics, you just have to like that I suppose. Both are good games. And you can find things you enjoy about both of them.

There is a lot of difference between BG and Torment, the most obvious that BG is more hack and slash orientated and Torment leans more towards the roleplaying through your characters dialogue. Both have their merits and i love them both.
As for boring, well, it depends on what you're looking for from the games. Both have their merits, and BG2 does intorduce more roleplaying aspects to the game than BG had, and i really enjoy playing from BG to ToB, but Torment is still the only game to have me needing to find out more about the character, without me being able to guess the story line within a chapter. I lost a lot of sleep from playing Torment and BG. Overall though, Torment had the more entrapping storyline for me.

 

Both BG1 and PT are awesome games in their own right, but where PT just pips BG to the post is that PT doesnt have the infamous
"You must gather your party before venturing forth"....

 

I actually prefer playing BG to PS:T.
It's a great game but i didn't like it how you wern't 'really' an adventurer. BG just seems a bit more fun for me...

Actualy, after futher playing of PS:T i have decided on Torment to be better than BG1. The mage class is wonderful, spells look great!
