    Just what the subject asks.
Now, I know there are some of you out there who don't believe in God. That's fine. If you don't, assume for the sake of this topic that God does exsist.
With that in mind, and the topic question, is there anything that could prevent you from knowing God personally?

I wouldn't know him personally, (I think it's pretty obvious by now I don't believe in him but for topics sake here goes) because I think he left this world to rot. Now that could have a few reasons. For example he got so fed up with people he just went on vacation (most likely), or Lucifer finally caught up on him and is torturing god in hell (not so likely).

So I wouldn't know him because he is a quitter.

God the all knowing should have seen the tree thing coming, and anyone who would sacrifice their son is totally out of it. No I would not like to know him personally because I'm afraid of what I might find out.

I agree with Apeman on this one.

If a god that is described in any of the major religions existed and I would get to know and meet him I would seriously ask what the hell he is doing. I would tell what a superjerk he is and that if he cant get his act together he should self destruct in a visible way so that all his misguided followers could get on with their lives.

"at worst may the gods smile on you, at best may they ignore you" no idea who said that, but no, I wouldn't want to know him.

I think the tree was included to give man a choice.

From your comments, God just can't win.

    Example:
"So I wouldn't know him because he is a quitter."
    Directly followed by...
"anyone who would sacrifice their son is totally out of it."
A couple more posts down and we're calling him a superjerk.

Sounds like some of you already know a "god" personally. His name is Satan, and you are saying and spreading the things he wants you to say, whether you acknowledge it or not. But it doesn't have to be that way.

"Well, no, he would probably blast me into tiny fragments. I get the feeling that thats the kind of guy he is."

Nope, wrong God. This is something Satan would do, and will have a whole eternity to do on all those that choose and go with him.

As for knowing God personally, we read from Genesis, God would walk through the Garden at times. He and Adam probably had a lot of good talks and moments before the apple incident. Find out the truth about God as much as you can here on Earth rather than spreading obvious hate about him, and by doing so will have a more meaningful walk with God in life and in heaven and know him personally.

Ah but my dear Biggitiy B, if your faith is correct Satan only exists because god lets him. As your god is GOD then Satan can only exist through god's will. And thus be in a way part of god.

Not sure what you're implying joacqin, but yes Lucifer was allowed to exist. He was a great angel at one time. But one needs to crack open Revelation to see that you won't be saved from Lucifer's wrath forever if you chose to follow him and continue to mock God as he does.

Yeah, but if a person threw his bible out of the window and cracked open a bag of rationality.. :spin:

[IMG] To get back on topic. yes I'd love to! It might be scary on one hand (God being so extremely good and me being so extremely bad), but on the other (and far more important) hand, God doesn't condemn for this! So I'd feel loved in the best way there is, Way better even than being loved by my gf.

Of course I'd like to know the answers to some questions and hopefully I will get them one day. But on the other hand I'm not God so if people would start asking him questions like the above God might start replying like he did to Job! (for those interested, read the final chapters of job.)

... the bag of rationality would lead them to going outside, retrieving that bible, and re-reading it with less biased lenses.

Take a look at the history of thought and see how many atheists have sought to disprove God's existence, and have ended up Christians (CS Lewis and Lee Strobal leap to mind)

    Read Pascal

You'll find out that Christianity is very rational as well as very personal.

I know you all have biases and so do I. You've probably seen the ugly side of Christianity. However, God is much bigger than a man made institution. We can know him personally. His Spirit is still here, His Son did die and come back to life for us.

Let me address the point that "someone who would let their son die is out there" ...

Earlier this week my 2 year old daughter had the flu. She was vomiting, had diarrhea, and a high fever. She just cried and squirmed around uncomfortable. One time after throwing up she just looked at herself crying saying "Oh No, a Mess!"

She didn't understand her disease. She doesn't know that the Motrin, and other medicine will help. She just knows that life isn't the way it should be, and that there is a mess she can't clean up.

Looking at her like that, I suddenly understood how God could send his Son to die for me. I love her so much and would endure anything to make her healthy again.

God's love for me is infinitely more that my love for my daughter. His ability to "fix" my disease (sin and death) is far more potent than the Baby Motrin I was spooning my daughter.

So, God sent his only son to earth to be beaten, spit upon and crucified, so that by His death and resurrection I could be healed.

If you want to know God personally, think about that for awhile.

    Greetings all!

First of all I would love to meet Him, just for the opportunity to bow before Him. I know many of you are probably rolling your eyes at that statement, but to put things in perspective, we are talking about the creator of the universe. A creator with unparalleled, complete power. For Him to even be interested in us is unbelievable in itself.

But He's more than interested. He loves us and is patient with us. We wonder why God allows the world to keep going on, even though it is full of bad things. Well, that extra time is time that those who have not obeyed His word can use to do so.

Patience...think of how He was with the Children of Israel in the Old Testament. They would serve Him for awhile, then fall back into idolatry, something God despises. Yet, even when they were deserving of punishment, He sent prophets to tell them of their wrongs and deliver them from their sins.

Would an uninterested God do that?

I would very much love to meet Him.

I can't believe you said that math, you're talking about an entity you've never seen before and one that you 'believe' exists.

What if for some reason there isn't a god, or for some reason he hates mankind. You can't know if he is as good as you say he is.

If god loves you so much, he has no reason to 'not' love the rest of us. That would mean he loves all the serialkillers, rapers, saddam, hitler infinetly more then you love your daughter. Did you ever think about that?

    read Pascal?

I did, Pascal´s wager is like this

Be christian, if you´re right you go to heaven.. if youre wrong, nothing happens

Pascal made a huge mistake here, there are officialy more than 200 religions plus atheism, so it actually means:
Be christian: congrats, you have now less than 0,5% to reach heaven, and ±99% to not reach heaven and burn in "hell". Plus 0,5% that nothing happens to you

Be atheist: congrats, you have now less than 0,5% that nothing happens to you, and ±99,5% to not reach heaven and burn in "hell".

Be some other religious person: congrats, you have now less than 0,5% to reach (your version) of heaven, and ±99% to not reach "heaven" and burn in "hell". Plus 0,5% that nothing happens to you

Well if the changes of NOT reaching heaven are already above 90%, I´ll reather live this life without restrictions save "common sense" (without God).

Than getting up every sundaymorning just to show that you love God, etc, etc.

See? Now that´s what I call rationalism

I agree with Mathetias on this one. God loves me more than I ever could love anyone. I love my g/f but I cannot even love her by a thousen of what god loves me. I have my own little variation of the christian belife, but in ground, its all the same.

I didn't read all of Mathetais' post, but I will use my daughter as an example -- I had to get a sliver out of her foot, and she kept telling me I was mean. I know it hurt, so I was cool with the unreasoned attack, but the principle remained the same -- she didn't understand what I was doing. Now, assuming God exists and that he created everything, I am willing to bet that he might, possibly, know a little bit more than me (note the heavy sarcasm). So judging God to me is pointless. And based on my faith, I, like a great many Christians, believe that I already have a relationship with God. Sometimes things happen that really torque me off (the creation of my mother-in-law springs to mind) but Given that he is a being far beyond my full comprehension, I do not presume to judge him. He has told me what I need to know, and while sometimes I may not be satisfied with that, I'll just have to make do.

    My 2 cents!
