Back to the topic, here in Argentina there is this guy, Meolanas, he has set record in swiming in south america; Italy, Spain, England and France has offered him 30/50.000.000 american dollars to became italian or the other, he reject them, even knowing he could train better and have more money he can even dream of, he says that competing for the country you were born and love has no price.

I agree with joaquin on this. I don't have a problem with an athlete competing for a country other than his native country, provided he lives there, is a citizen there, and considers that country to be "his country" for lack of a better term. I do however, have a problem with athletes being bought off to play for a country, even though they have no connection or even particularly like the country they are playing for.

As also has been said, it doesn't matter a bit what your race is concerning the country you compete for. If that were true, there would be no Americans in the Olympics at all, as there are very few native Americans within the U.S. I also believe that it is the multi-racial environment within the U.S. that allows us to be competitive in so many sports. We have no majority race at this point. We are still more European than anything else, but we have substantial percentage of African and Hispanic ancestories as well.

 

What's so uneuropean about am Hispanic ancestory ?

 

The UK is another very mutli-cultural society, like the US. But the other question is "how European is Europe?". In this day and age, race has much less to do with nationality, which is how it should be.

 

I love the way white English people go on about how they love their multi-cultural society until one day they have some family of asylum seekers move in next-door or their teenage daughter brings home some big black guy. Then they don't love their multi-cultural society so much.

 

That's a rather short-sighted view. You're saying that every white person in Britain is a closet racist that will come out whenever faced with asylum seekers or "some big black guy"? You have serious issues.

 

Well, it is true that the term "Hispanic" encompasses quite a lot, and it is further true that one can be Hispanic and have European ancestry. Hispanic technically isn't even a race, but a mixture of races. Hispanic can be exclusively or a mixture of any of the following: European, African, and Native Latin American.

However, that having been said, there are many more Hispanic People who have the African and Native Latin American ancestry than European (although I do know a Hispanic that has blonde hair and green eyes).

If you hate your country so much, then shut up and move. Does it really make you sleep better at night to sit and bitch about it all the time? I mean really - what's the point? Would you rather live somewhere else, or would you complain there too?

European countries are small and intercontinental travel is relatively inexpensive from what I understand. If the UK is such an intolerable pit of hell, do something about it. Either change your situation and stop being such a Negative Nancy, or just shut your pie hole. Leave Britain to those who appreciate it and seek your fortune elsewhere.

No offense or anything...I just don't understand such an impenetrably negative attitude towards a first-world free nation. Christ - there's no way it's as bad as you make it seem, and considering all the proud Brits I've met, I find it hard to believe you don't get your ass kicked all the time (unless you reserve your vitriol for anonymous forums).

Oh, come on! People who hate asylum seekers may be idiots, but that's human nature. We're all idiots. I'm sure if the situation was repeated in any other country then you'd get pockets of anti-asylum seekers too. I mean, it's only to be expected as we're a welfare state and that can cause people to think that foreigners are freeloading off us. I'm not trying to make excuses, and our system is far from perfect, but give it a break at least! Generally Britain's a very tolerant and multi-cultural country that I'm proud to live in.

And Death Rabbit is right, moving to another European Union state is dead easy these days, so just move somewhere else if you don't like the UK. Though to be honest you're going to get pockets of racism wherever you go, sad as that is.

Also European countries aren't small, it's just that America China and Russia are too big.

 

Yeah, but neither is my hair fair nor my eyes blue and still I consider myself European. Indeed, brown skind and dark hair looks pretty European to me as I am in the most northern part of the south. What stroke me as intersting is, that you seemingly categorized North-America more European as Latin-American. From my intuition, I'd it's the other way around. Latin-America is more European culture-wise then the neighbouring continent (except Mexico) to the north, in my view. Or at least, aren't they both equally uneuropean ?

As for "race" (being aware of the nothingness of the term). I don't know if Northern-Africa can be divided from Europe "race-wise". Sub-Saharan Africa may provide different looks, but Nothern-Africa. I don't think so.

The problem would be, I fear, that this would be no remedy for his uneasiness with the situation. As he'd have a hard-time to find a place in Western-Europe where the picture isn't somewhat similar.

Sarevok, I have to say you are the most closed minded fool I have seen yet. And it's a gigantic insult to all British people if you think you can label us closet racists. Just because your mind works that twisted way, doesnt mean the rest of us do. Try joining in the community around you, you might find it a liberating experiance.

 

I do not hate this country but where I live is a **** hole same as every other major city in this country. Not to say that everywhere in England is like that because it is not, but do you know why? You know all of the “proud Brits” I know all seem to have the exact same negative attitude toward this country and it's Muslim communities.

 

Firstly, I have a problem with the phrase "proud brits" - you make it sound like they're racist. When I said that I was proud to come from Britain, I meant that I like living here and enjoy my heritage, not that Britain is any better than any other country (if anything, it's worse!). Most people are proud to come from where they were brought up, it's just human nature. Just wanted to clear that up.

Secondly, the only people I know *of* (I don't know any personally, that is) that have a negative attitude towards Muslim communities in this country are racists, and are as much in a minority here than in anywhere else in the world.

Just out of curiosity, what city do you live in? I'd be suprised if it really was the "same as every other major city in this country".

What were you thinking man? As BOC aptly put it, it was alright for the UK to rule India and Pakistan for two and a half CENTURIES, and this guy who's been living in the UK all his life can't fight for the UK? That's just a very sad sentiment.
