I used to have an opinion on what is the best, but now I like soloing with all classes.

My favourite at the moment is multiclass fighter/druid although i've used shadowkeeper to make it an avenger class. still stuck to the -2 str and con though.

For a first time through I'd recommend the f/m/t multiclass.

    Try a Mage/Thief or Fighter/Mage/Thief.

Although traps aren't a big issue, having a thief will make some sections much easier. Yes, they can be by-passed with the aid of spells, but a thief makes it much easier.

Use invisibility spell, sneak around, disable traps, back-stab, disappear, move away, fireball cloudkill, etc, etc.

    Great fun!!!

Multiclasses start off slowly, but pick-up mid game. You'll lose out on lots of high level spells, but still have loads of thief abilities. Plus when you get over 3000000XP the multiclasses start coming into their own - see TOB forum for more info.

Try a Monk or an Archer! The problem is that you'll have to use spells when facing a trap! Just like posted above by Bard!
    Good luck!

There are examples of almost every class doing solo on this forum. Some of the most popular are F/M/T, M/T, F/M/C, Blade, Sorcerer or Undead Hunter (for protection from hold).

Some form of magic is a prevailing theme in all of these. If you have TOB installed then a single-class thief becomes more viable because of the HLA's. Carsomyr could solve some of your dispell magic problems.

I think there are definitely too many mages to avoid some sort of magic class. Go for a multi-class mage or a Sorc. Search the forum and you'll find lots of info about how awesome these are. A straight fighter(ish) type class will have serious issues getting through the defences of some of the mages!!!

A tip for the fighter(ish) characters out there who can't backstab:

Use a Ring of Invisibility (or a potion), sneak up on the mage - and party if any - and fire an arrow of biting at him before his combat protections become active.
The poison damage should make him fail relatively often which means that: a) you can concentrate on the other enemies and b) it's less dangerous to wait out his combat protections.

This obviously requires that your character has some skill with a bow.

I´d go with the Monk if I were you just for the fun of it. It´s alittle boring since you miss out alot of the hot equipment other classes would use, but he makes it up in raw power instead at higher levels :)

I didn't know it was possible to be a Kensai/Mage! I thought that only the singular type of each class (in this case the Fighter) could be used in Multi-classes.

In multiclass, yes. He's talking about dual class kensai/mage.

My first successful solo was a Human Necromancer. The skeleton warriors can do a decent job tying up fighters, once one gets to level 15.

Go with a fighter, a true tank and just hack and slash your way through.

    Monks are great because....
    1)They have good offensive power
2)they can use wands (this is probably a bug)
    3) they can use any 1 handed weapon, including....

Ibretha - casts mirror immage 1 per day
    - mental block - some sword that can cast hast 3 times per day

of course you dont weild them, you use your fists and just use your fists.

Bards are also good as they can use wands and those cool instruments that you usuallyu throw away.

Anyway with either of these you can cast plenty of summons with the wand of Monster summoning.

A good tactic with a warior is to have him/her wear two rings of the ram and have him cast simulacrum using Vhaliors helm. Then you can use 4 rings of the ram per day!!!

    Can a Fighter/Mage wear a helm or a F/T for that matter??
