How can I use lower level spells in higher level spell slots?

Ok I'v been battling beings you might call "monsters" and gained a lot of XP. I want to use my magic missle spells in 4th level slots. My friend says it cant be done but I think that it can. Whos right? And if I'm right how do I do it?

 

You can't do it in Baldurs Gate, but in the normal pen and paper rules I wouldn't know

well in truth you can do it, just use IEEP, change the lvl of the spell and the name and resave it, under a different file name then use ieep to create a scroll for it ,then launch the game, create the item and write it

I'm interested now. What does casting them as a fourth level spell do for the spell itself. I know in PnP lots of metamagic feats (3rd edition folks) use up higher level slots, but I don't think that in itself does anything for the spell. It's the feats that make the difference. I know caster level makes a difference of course. Does it make a difference to the actual spell other than to just have say, 7 or so magic missles around instead of just 5?

 

nope, no change at all. Unless of course you change the spell yourself
