I have to agree with Shoshino in that it has been made far worse than it was by the media and the security services and police. The way it has been handled has been to sensationalise, almost produce hysteria and panic. Being a cynic it almost makes me look at the other news items to see what they wanted to slip past us while we concentrated on this hysteria.

Also we should stop focussing on the fact that they may be muslim or Al-qaeda or anything else, since we don't know except for the fact that they were British and of Asian ethnicity; and as Kit points out we should be grateful that this plot has been foiled. But we have to remember as a former commander of Special Branch (Anti-terrorist police in the UK) said "The terrorist has to get lucky once to achieve his aims, we have to get lucky every time to achieve ours"

It's true that the media like to blow things out of proportions, but the scumbag's intentions are more than clear. Just be glad they didn't succeed in their plans, otherwise we would be facing blind rage all over Europe as we speak. Mosques would have been torched, muslims would have been assaulted, stuff like that. This is what COULD have happened, and it's what WILL happen if they ever succeed in the future. I can't help getting a feeling of sitting on a ticking timebomb here in Europe, sooner or later it's gonna blow, and it's going to be ugly.

Yup, definitely better safe than sorry. Loss of innocent lives are not a good thing at all.

On another point, if it was deliberately blown up out of proportion, then it was a nice little diversion from what's happening right now in the Middle East.

I'd also like to express my gratitude to the Intelligence Services who worked to crack this case...and of course the plot was foiled...people are under arrest aren't they?

I think it also needs to be mentioned that a key tip that led to the breakdown of this terrorist cell came from within the English Muslim community.

They're "Terrorists" first...you can add whatever other words you want..."fascist", "islamist", "insurgent" or "near sighted goat farming agoraphobics"...it doesn't matter. They're friggin Terrorists. And now they're in jail.

thats it.... they could not have succeeded in their plans... they were caught by a simple check when trying to get their first device aboard a plane, they were never capable of doing what was intended.

the media make it look like they could have actually done this...

it was never going to happen people.

And planes wouldn't have slammed into the WTC, the Pentagon and a grassy field with significantly less security and intelligence.

    What's your point?

Just wanted to point this out, but I think The Great Snook was being sarcastic about the Islamic bit.

Aik had it right. No matter what the outcome was, the terrorists win. And more was certainly made out of it than it could have been. And that's what the terrorsits want. They know the media will take the story and run with it. Hell, if you think about it, the terrorists never really have to actually blow themselves up anymore to cause panic. Just get together, plan an attack, let the info get out, sit back and watch.
I leave tomorrow night, I'll see if I can let everyone know how the airport adventure goes.

It worries me that the British police are sitting around in the airports with *machine guns*. Yeah - what are they going to do if the terrorists rock up - open fire in a crowded airport? Good thinking people...

Well, there are normally armed police in airports. It's a misconception that the British police aren't armed; it's a lot more common to see firearms officers than many people think, especially in London. Granted, only officers who have had specialist training are permitted to carry firearms and the average bobby doesn't. But some measure of armed response is neccessary.

As for the terrorist "success"... Get real, people. This story will mostly die down within a week. The terrorists were prevented from making this another memorial day, and that's what counts. The media will always, always, try to hype things up. Yesterday & Thursday was full of reporters trying to egg people on to chat **** about how annoyed they were, how the extra measures were unnecessary, everybody was over-reacting etc. But the overwhelming majority reacted quite sensibly, just getting on with what needed to be done. The reporters were constantly fishing for negative responses, and weren't getting any. If they did, then the people interviewed didn't give good impressions of their intelligence. People complaining about not being allowed to take iPods (surely someone must realise that they're exactly the right size for a small detonator?) and liquids (NEWS FLASH: not all explosive devices consist of 3 sticks of dynamite attached to an alarm clock), just came across as petty and ignorant.

From what I read, the Police had plenty of reasons for taking the action they did at each stage. No-one's died. Many could have done. A lot of people were inconvenienced; most didn't care because they were safe. I'm not afraid to call it when the security services **** up. I'm not going to deny them praise when they get something right, as it seems they have done in this eventuality. Obviously, more will come out in time, but so far, it's so good.

well, see when flight prices skyrocket because of share collapse.

what get me is that people are soo worried about a bomb on a plane, i personally would detonate a suit case sized bomb at an airport neat busy checkin desks, you could kill thousands

ok, just wanna raise one point at joacquin:
Not true, i have friends out in Zimbabwe, and it isnt jsut blacks being killed, whites are aswell. Sure most of it was a decade ago, but occasioanlly whites are being killed, and not jsut in the common meaning. Whites are being driven out of buisness and money, and when they run out of money, they are forced to flee or live in the streets, which if they take the later, will lead to death. So your point isnt entirley valid.

Well, I flew out of San Diego last night around 10:55 pm. I got there three hours early like they have been recommending. And guess what? I was through check-in, through security and to the gate in 20 minutes! LOL

So I got to sit around, watch football highlights at the bar and pay ungodly amounts of money for drinks!

I'm sitting in O'Hare in Chicago waiting for my next flight which leaves at 7:30. My flight arrived at 4:30 and as I walked past security check in, it was a decent line, but nothing too long. But I guess it could have been long for 430.

Not too bad, just can't bring any drinks onto the plane, even ones bought in the terminal.

Oh, and for all you beer affectionados, even when drinks are allowed, you can only consume alchohol actually purchased on the plane.

What might be the most interesting about this story is that apparently the police were tipped to it by a muslim:

    (from Wa. Post article )

So, maybe a lesson from this is that one should put less emphasis on secret monitoring of phone conversations, and more on trying to adress the problems the immigrant communities are struggling with.

That's a very sensible, reasonable, workable idea - which is, of course, why the government won't persue it...
