Yeah just name (who you think are)the top three guitar players/virtuosos ever, and why (if possible).

    1) Jimi Hendrix: He's god, he first got me into guitar and he popularized everthing there is about the guitar.

    2) Joe Satriani: Hammet, Vai, enough said.

    3) Yngwei Malmsteen: Father of the modern shred.

2)Randy Rhoads! He played with Ozzy and did the fantastic Guitarplay on Crazy train!

Sultans of swing, Private investigations, Telegraph road
    Joe Satriani.
    I just like his music
    Gary Moore
    Same as above.

    My three guitar heroes are:

    Paul McCartney
    George Harrison
    Jimmy Page

Never heard of Randy Rhoades (but he or she sounds like some kind of porn star)

Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore and Ritchie Blackmore.

A porn star? You'll burn in hell Harbourboy. Randy Rhoads was one of the most talented heavy metal guitarists and he was the guitarist of the first solo albums of Ozzy Osbourne. He died in a plane crush in 1983 IIRC and Ozzy released the live album "Tribute" in 1987 in order to honour his memory.

    Joe Satriani
    Steve Vai
    Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

All three are excellent live, but I would say Vai edges it.

Mine is similar to BOC with Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Richie Blackmore.

but I include Matti Svatizki, Yossi Saharon, Hakan Utangaç and Metin Türkcan.

I am also influenced by other non-guitar players for my guitar playing such as John Coltrane and various whistle and mandoline players.

    1. Slash: Great sense of melody, does about 3 solos per song and it doesn't get boring they all sound great.
    2. Keith Richars: The coolest rythm guitarist ever.
    3. Pete Townshend: Underrated genius, great rythm and lead player.

As far as shredders go Vinnie Vincent is definetly King or Pharao in this case. In metal I'd go with Zakk Wylde.

Cheers, Cesard! It's good to see how what heroes like Utangac have done for modern guitar music is not forgotten!

And of course, the infamous style of Svatztiki had left generations of musicians with their mouths open. :thumb:

I myself love the works of non-guitar players like Ivo Pogorelich or Alfred Brendel.

    (No offence... ;) )

    @ Erebus

No, that was Randy Rhoads (Blizzard of Ozz, 1980), IIRC Wylde's first Ozzy album was "No Rest for the Wicked" (1988), Both are great though.

@ BOC March 18, 1982, was the day Randy Rhoads died in the plain crash.

@Erebus NO! But he did play it on a lot of live shows, and Albums. The original Studio version and the first live version (on Tribute) where played by Randy.

Page, Hendrix, Clapton are my three biggest influences, but I also love Robert Jonson, Chuck Berry, Peter Greene, Mark Knopfler (Or as I like to call him, the Knopf ;) ) and probably half a dozen others.

    1) Adrian Smith - my fave Maiden guitarist :D

    2) Hank Shermann & Michael Denner - they have to come together because, for me, they're the best guitar duo that metal ever saw (check Mercyful Fate and now Force Of Evil)

    3) Chuck Schüldiner - this guy was a genius and a hell of a guitar player...(check Death and Control Denied)

There's a lot more but these are the 3 ones that came to my mind besides the ones already stated here.

    My biggest influences are:

Michael Amott from Arch Enemy (riffs)
Alexi Laiho from Children Of Bodom (solos)
Jesper Stromblad from In Flames (riffs & leads)

These guys made me pick up the guitar and really start playing. I may have grown up on a steady diet of Hetfield and Mustaine, but I never wanted to play like them.

I guess it would be Page on lead guitar, Petty on rhythm guitar (I think he is way underappreciated) and Townshend on "attitude" guitar.
