Well, i thought it was a good one-time viewing and i knew the ending would have been what it was, my only two gripes were the overly mature kid and the lack of the traditional sound track.

It was good...for what is was. A simple thriller full of "running" and "screaming" though the special effects were very amazing. The ending wasn't a surprise though.

Where I live going to the movies is expensive so I wouldn't rate it one of those films worth my money.

It was absolutely dreadful, by far the worst Spielberg has ever made.

First, as some have alluded to, the story has no natural arc. One minute the aliens are dominating the earth. The next they're all dead. A brief explanation is only provided at the end and is completely unsatisfying.

Second, while the invasion of earth would be enough to keep most filmmakers busy, Spielberg spins the whole premise as a domestic drama. All that stuff about the earth being conquered by alien tripods is just background. The movie is really about a selifish divorced father of two (Cruise) learning to become a become a better daddy. This is hardly surprising - almost every Spielberg movie has some subtext about absent fathers - but it's so horribly forced. The audience came to see aliens blow up cities, not to see Cruise bonding with his horrible children.

Third, there are more gaps-in-logic here than in any other film in living memory. Sure, it's a sci-fi blockbuster and you have to let some stuff slide, but it's obvious hardly any logic was applied to the screenplay. People who have seen the movie will know exactly what I mean.

Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful - even worse than 'The Terminal.'
