When you play on the Insane difficulty, and have the following party of three:

    - no NPC - all pre-generated characters
    - weakest one is Swashbuckler/Thief lvl 10/19, wielding The Equaliser, Sentinel Shield, Human Flesh Armor, Helm of Balduran, Ring of Regen, Ring of Earth Control, Amulet of Magic Resistance, Gloves of Healing, Boots of Speed: THACO -20, AC -12, 7/2 attacks per round, 5 points in LSwords, 5 in THSwords, and 2 in THStyle and SHStyle.

    - Second best is Ranger/Cleric lvl 7/20 dual-wielding the Crom + Flail of Ages, Vhalior's Helm, Red Dragon Scales, Ring of Prot +2, Ring of Regen, Amulet of Power, Boots of Speed, Gauntlets of Weapon Skill: THACO -18/-14 (with spells) AC -9 (or -11 when SHStyle), 3 attacks per round, all profs for Mace, Hammer, Flails, SHStyle, THStyle.

    - Best char Kensai/Mage lvl 9/17, wielding the Staff of Magi (got in Chap 3), Mask of Strohm, Robes of Vecna, Ring of Gaxx (got in Chap 2), Ring of Wizardry, Amulet of Magic Resistance, Boots of North: THACO -2 (-10 with spells), AC -6 (-10 with spells), 2 attacks per round (5 with spells), 5 profs in Staff, 2 in THStyle.

I am just out of Underdark.

Hmmz what you you do when you got these two items in your hands and your skilled. This is no power-gaming, when you are skilled in using these two weapons. It's the best thing to do.. powergaming is not doing the best thing to do.

Powergaming is to play only for power and forget the RPG/AD&D-rules. For example, a Mage doesn't have a strength of 18. A thief hides in shadow and kills somebody with a dart, bow, dagger or short sowrd but not with an Equalizer. And indeed, the best example of powergaming is removing de XP-gap.

Powergaming is when you equip your x-cap-removed lvl-40 mage with the selfmade "dagger of plentyful damage" - causing 1072 damage each hit - of course just for back-up ...

What I call powergaming is when you have a good/neutral party, you chose to evil way in hell JUST TO GET THE BLACKRAZOR. That's ultimate powergaming.

BG2-Powergaming is the Art of truly playing the game with as only goal to beat it as hard as you can. By exploiting engine-flaws (big or minor), by violating the rules the game's based on (mind you, not the game-rules themselves), by using some device (SK) to enhance your strenght and prowess...

At least, that's some people's opinion. To me, powergaming in a PC-game is a pretty meaningless word. To each his own after all.

I would be a good example, hardest settings, 4 person groups, not using the rift device to kill the unseeing eye, no shortcuts, fight everything head on, no luring away. i dont even use the spell lower resistance anymore. I consider that spell cheap now.

Powergaming is a term incompetent buffoons such as myself use against people who are actually good at the game.

There are alternative definitions, mainly used by people who aren't incompetent buffoons. (Many of the good people here use the term powergamer as an insult without being incompetent buffoons) - Man, I hope I mangaged to escape only insulting myself.

Well, I consider myself a powergamer, but played by the rules...

I love finding good combinations of spells, combinations of characters & weapons (ex my Kensai/Theif or Kensai/Mage)

I created all my own characters:

    Paladin/Undead Hunter
    Kensai/Theif
    Kensai/Mage
    Mage/Cleric
    Sorcerer

I planned what they would be like at later levels to maximize their potential (ex- Kensai/Theif is lookin for a really nice Katana, Kensai/Mage is looking for a special longsword from later in the game)

I played the hardest difficulty level, with the intent of doing every quest in the game, and beating it as harshly as possible.

    :)

    Asskicking=powergaming

I'll probably play through again with the x-cap off too, to really arse kick.

but, I haven't cheated in any way.

I spoze you could come up with different alignments of powergamers:

Lawful Good powergamer = roles once on dice, accepts stats & plays, uses only Multiclass or Single Class, leaves all NPCs alive
Chaotic Good powergamer = plays with no cheats, plays with 4 chars, eaves all NPCs alive
Neutral Good powergamer = plays with no cheats, rerolls all till best results, plays with 4 chars, leaves all NPCs alive
True Neutral powergamer = rerolls all till best results, plays with 4 chars, leaves alive or kills NPCs.
Neutral Evil powergamer = rerolls all till gets best results, xp cap removed, plays with 4 chars, kills all NPCs
lawful Evil powergamer = rerolls all till gets best results, xp cap removed, plays with 4 characters, leaves all NPCs alive.
Chaotic Evil powergamer = edits characters to give 18 in all stats, plays on hardest, xp cap removed, edits characters to give best weapons. plays with 4 characters, kills all NPCs.

hmm, me wonders which me fits...
xp cap removed, 5 chars, all quests, lawful... lawful good? true neutral?
