    What a great game to watch from a neutral perspective. High tension all round. I really thought England blew it several times, first conceding the equaliser, then another in extra-time, and then during the penalties with Becks missing the very first shot. But they always came back. Gripping stuff.

    Lay off the battery acid, i wasn't talking about Beckham. England doesn't need Beckham to begin with, in fact, the way i see it, he's only holding them down.

    @Harbourboy

    I don't think that we're gonna make it, France is 3 classes better atleast and our only advantages are that we have a far better coach and that the french players are more tired since they have played much more games this year. If we manage to block Zidane we may have a chance but this is very difficult. Although, hope is the last thing that dies.

    No wonder - this thread was going at 100km an hour after that game. I wonder who will end up as top-scorer in this competition now that Rooney is out.

    @ Harbourboy

    I'm going to say van Nistelrooy. I've never seen such an out and out finisher like him since, well... Marco van Basten. You wouldn't bet against him once he's inside the box.

    Wow! What a game!

    Dont blame the ref dudes, it was a very clear foul, if it had been allowed it would have been a scandal. Kudos for the ref for daring to make the right call there. I think you should blame Rooney's injury. The English offence was sorely lacking after he had to go off.

    I have to say that I rooted for Portugal, I am playing with Porto right now in CM and have many of the Portuguese players in my squad. ;)

    Oh, and Harbourboy I think it is, his name isnt Costa, it is Rui Costa, first name Manuel.

    I stand corrected.

    Man, there are a lot of sad-looking English fans here at work today. Maybe I should suggest we all knock off work early and go down to the pub to make them feel better.

    Only two years to go until the next soccer World Cup......

    Shame there is nobody from Portugal on these boards to balance out all this misery.

    By the way, good point Takara. Well said.

    What saddens me more is that Belgium wasn't there at all.

    @BOC, that's rubbish - Terry wasn't paying attention to the keeper, and nor should he have been. If you're standing there waiting for the ball and the keeper isn't good enough to get past you and get the ball you haven't fouled him. If I'd been in goal Terry would have been flattened

    Yes the ref was rubbish, even before the disallowed goal thing (stuff like when Campbell was waiting to head the ball, and a Portugese player jumped trying to get it and fell over him, so he gave a free kick to Portugal - absolutely ridiculous)

    England were also rubbish on the whole. The commentators were claiming that Rooney going off was a major factor in the way the game turned out, but I'm not so sure. The wheels had already started to come off the England wagon by then. But even though it's impossible to know for sure, I think we would have won it if he hadn't got injured

    The way we played we can't really complain about losing, but we were very unlucky in the end

    Master of Nuhn, I take it that was a sarcastical comment, if not: Why would you be sad because of that? I don't think Belgium would've brought any good footbal to watch.

    I think a lot of people over here are being bad losers (some would say me aswell!).

    It's easy to say the goal should have been allowed looking at slow-motion replays from different angles - angles that don't show us what the referee saw.

    Goals like that are always disallowed when there is any sort of challenge on the goalkeeper. It's not the referee I have the problem with - it's the rules that allow keepers to climb all over strikers to claim a catch but doesn't allow strikers (or in this case defenders!) to compete with the keeper for the ball.

    We deserved to go out last night. We were beaten by the better side. We had the most clear-cut chances but we didn't take them, we sat off when we should have put Portugal to bed.

    To call the referee a cheat is just silly and comes across very bitter. But that doesn't stop me from being devastated :( .

    @Metal Leper

    Perhaps I watched a different game. What I saw is that Terry was behind the goalkeeper and his hands were on the goalkeeper's shoulders. If this isn't a foul by english standards, I assume that you play the game with completely different rules than the rest of the world.
