It's not the result, but the intent.

Of course, the intent might have been thiis sort of notoriety/fame/whatever, but if so, it's still...

Ah, whom am I kidding. A great way to get internet fame.

I could pump you full of chemicals erasing all feeling of pain, then proceed to cutting your body to pieces an inch by an inch. Would that make the deed any better, do you think?

And comparing Pavlov's experiments is hardly a good idea either. Although the very existence of animal testing is ethically debatable, the fact remains that scientists at least try to learn something hopefully useful from it. This thing here was done for nothing more but sadistic pleasure.

@Foradasthar: I know you're only trying to make an example, but I believe that you, in no way, can compare a human being to a berely sentient animal as a slug.

That said, I will say; Yes. It does make it better that the snail doesn't feel injured by this. That would make it cruel. This here is just an ill-thought-of experiment. If the snail was able to feel that it was dying, it would be something else.

I spread salt in my backyard, to get rid of snails. I set out poison for them as well. Does this make me evil?

I don't feel wracked with guilt every time I kill a bug. That's just not the way I am.

i hate bugs in general :/ If I catch some roaches then you can be damn sure they're all gonna be wearing size 9 and 1/2 Nikes on them :p And I don't really think it was all that bad. To reiterate what a lot of people have already said: it WAS just a slug. The damn things eat your mother's plants for chrissakes :p I'm too lazy to have done anything like that guy, but if I did, I might have just poured the salt on the slug to see what would happen :/

Ah, the memories of American Civil War some hundred years ago... Get shot to a arm or leg, need to amputate with a saw, and painkillers invented only a few generations later. :shake:

Snail in a maze, found its way out, yay; I got crush a few flies between my hands out of the sheer boredom. :p

Usage of salt in the case of clearing the roads of snow/ice actually lowers the freezing point of the water. That is why the snow/ice melts. Sea water only freezes at extreme low temperatures (or if the water has a relatively low salt concentration).

Killing snails with salt is indeed caused by osmosis as earlier pointed out. Water in cells tends to flow from an environment with a low salt concentration to an environment with a high salt concentration to balance the two. The reversed process can be used ie to make salt water drinkable ;) .

Did anybody here ever listen to the sound a snail makes when you pour salt on it? It's a long time ago I last heart it, but as far as I remember it sounded pretty spooky, does anybody have a .wav file of this?
