I agree with fruit juice being bad for you.

I drink myself a bit of cola and mostly just water these times. Might be because the water is excellent here.

I had a bottle of ice cold Mt. Dew with lunch. It was great, Kitrax! :D

I've never tasted Mt. Dew, someone told me it tasted like water with loads of sugar. I drink mostly tap water (it's pretty good around here), beer, milk and fruit juice. I drink on average maybe one bottle (3.3dl) of soda a week.

Oh, and sometimes I get a bad craving for piimä, I found this description for it in wikipedia.
    Great! :p

Drink Goats milk or Soya milk, its got just as much calcium as cows milk, tastes better, and has more vitamens.

    Goats cheese is also great.

Sarevok, can you please post some specifics about how milk and all dairy products are "very bad" for people? If possible, provide links to accepted scientific research to back up your points. While I accept that cow's milk isn't intended for human consumption - it's meant to be drunk by a baby cow, after all - that doesn't automatically make it harmful.

The same question goes out to those who think fruit juice is bad. If you're going to make such a contention, back it up.

Aside from higher production costs, soy milk is also more expensive than cow's milk because of much smaller demand, so there's a smaller market across which those production costs must be amortized. Also, at least in the US, don't forget about the powerful agricultural lobby and the price supports and subsidies they've wrangled over the years.

@Kitrax: Prepare for caffeine-withdrawal headaches. Ibuprofen and extra water will help. If your tap water doesn't taste good, try a Brita filter pitcher in the fridge. The cartridges aren't too expensive when you can get the bulk packs at BJ's or Costco or other such places. Exercise, too, can be helpful in breaking a caffeine addiction.

*Rally* Cows milk is high in lactose - milk sugars, and this causes irritation to a lot of people, especially if they are of Asian decent, however goats milk is very low in this and tastes much better.

An don't even get me started on the saturated fat (even with skimmed milk) content.

I don't know if I could give up my Mountain Dew (especially the Code Red variant). I tend to drink probably at least a hundred ounces a day of various sodas. And for some reason I'm having trouble getting to sleep right now. :p The best of luck to anyone who tries.

I've never had goats milk, the thought of it just doesn't sound all that appealling. Which, considering what does sound appealling, isn't saying a whole lot. On the other hand, I loe a tall glass of cold milk.

I thought soy milk was from processed soy beans, not going through a cow, since people with milk allergies can drink the stuff.

As for the Mt. Dew thing, yeah, it's mine, too. I used to drink 4-5 litres/day, but have cut back to water. It wasn't for health reasons. More like I couldn't afford to keep drinking it that often. I can't ever give it up - addiction withdrawls are way too hard on me.

Water's pretty icky tasting here in Canada/US. In Iowa, the water tasted rusty or just 'funky'. Canada has this 'blah' flavor that makes it halfway tolerable.

Good luck for those who are stopping. If you do it and succeed; great! :thumb:
If you don't, don't worry. It isn't called an addiction because it's easy to get over.

@Cesard: Lactose intolerance is a separate issue that effects a subset of the general populace. Sarevok's statement says that dairy is bad for everyone, and I want to know specifically how it's bad and what evidence he's using to reach that conclusion.

As for the fat content...you can't eliminate all fat from your diet, it's would be biologically insane to do so. Fat is an important nutrient. However, people need to be conscious of what KINDS of fat they consume, and how much. For example, I'f I'm going to consume 100 calories worth of fat, if I get it from ice cream at least there are some other nutrients in the package, as opposed to eating, say, Doritos.

There has been research linking cows milk to prostate cancer. Of course, women don't have have to worry about that and it takes a lot of milk to cause problems. Three glasses of cow's milk a day is quite healthy for you.

As for fruit juice being unhealthy, that is false. 100% fruit juice is one of the healthiest things to drink (along with water). Now, the concentrate stuff isn't as good.

Kindly stop stating your opinions as facts. I have drunk both cows' and goats' milk in the past and I find the cow's milk to taste much better.

Prove it. There is very little if any saturated fat in skim milk. Small quantities of saturated fat are healthy anyway.

No, they are not. Teeth are made of enamel strengthened with calcium. Bones are not. Teeth are much harder and more durable than bone.

The kinds of fat matter a lot more than the source. Doritos are very high in transfats which you want to avoid.

Eliminating fat from your diet is flat-out stupid, period.

Are there seriously people who who think that fruit juice is bad for you? Madness. Unless maybe if you fell in a vat of it and drowned, it's super healthy especially if freshly squeezed.

Re: fruit juice. Google "fruit juice" and "blood sugar" and see what you find. One example:

And yet another reason to avoid Mt. Dew, especially, if you enjoy crystal methamphetemines: meth mouth! (note the attractive illustration):

OK - fruit juice is high in simple carbohydrates. So, don't go around drinking 3 litres of it a day. But it's still vastly more healthy than any sugary carbonated drink.

While obviously there is a lot of intelligence shown in trying to prove or disprove whether milk and fruit juice are healthy or not, I obviously don't see any wisdom in arguing about it. I don't see why "gay" is associated with fruit juice or milk is for kids. I mean, if one becomes a man because he can drink alcoholic drinks, does that mean that he is not man enough if he doesn't have his beer? I know a lot of guys who need no beer or scotch to be a man. I mean, everybody knows nothing is good if taken excessively or there is no 100% healthy food, there will always be some exceptions. So why bother with such arguments. It would have been more helpfull if suggestions about certain conditions doesn't go right with certain beverages. Like for example, if one have high uric acid in their system, they should avoid certain fruit with high uric acid content like strawberry. And so forth.

    Peace. ;)

Because we want to be reasonably healthy and not suffer as a result of following an unhealthy diet? I don't think there is really any serious argument with the original premise that 2 litres of Mountain Dew a day is not a recommended way to treat your body.

What about all things in moderation? Two to three glasses of milk, some water, some fruit juice, even the one mountain dew he's allowed per day...

By putting down each other's prefered beverages? Golly, if I knew nothing about milk, soda, or fruit juices, after reading this thread, I'd still be confused which is the "real" healthy and unhealthy one for my diet.

While it is true that the argument is not really that serious, especially that it is a known fact that people here are generally open minded and intelligent. But still, I feel that it's would have been more helpful if we can be more specific rather than "defensively" general.

Cows milk linked to Parkinsons disease:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4419477.stm

Waits on Rastor to inform me that 'cows' are not mentioned anywhere in this article :D

Skimmed milk is still high in cholesterol, I don't have the link so you can look it up yourself.

Cesard, since when is 2 mg cholesterol per serving considered "high"?

    Skim Milk Nutrition Label

And you're grasping at straws with that Parkinsons story. Even the researchers involved in the study admit that the incidence is very low, and that the other health benefits of milk shouldn't be forsaken because of it.

Gnarff said it best - all things in moderation. All people have to do is recognize that there's a difference between a moderate quantity of a beneficial food and a moderate quantity of a junk food.
