The only problem with making your own characters is that you miss out on all the character interactions. It's like having robots in your party, all skill, no personality.

Still, when starting for the first time, I like to go multiplayer with a good fighter plus a good mage, leaving four characters to pick up along the way. That gives at least a decent base to go through the game to see how the game develops and plays. The next time thru, develop the specialized party of your dreams (or nightmares, as applicable)

Elverath: I'm not sure you can save a multiplayer game to a single player file as such. But the multiplayer game plays the same a single player with the exception that you can create one or all of the players yourself. The multiplayer saved game file stores all the character in you party (PC and NPC) just like the single player files. I believe the saved game files are stored in separate directories for multi and single. I think I read on another topic that you can copy your multi save file into the single save directory and run it from there just like a single player file. Don't know what that does to any extra charaters you may have created, though. If they get killed or you replace them with another NPC, they may be gone for good...no returning. In multiplayer, you export your character before replacing him, then you can reimport him later if you want his skills.

Hope this helps, or did I miss the point of the question?

You can copy multiplayer files into the single player folder, nothing happens to the character(s) you create in multiplayer. You can also place a copy of your single player save into the multiplayer folder.

It is true that if you replace a character you create, it will be gone for good. Same thing if it is petrified of imprisioned and released. You can't get them back into your party. In single player, you can only export your main character.

If your playing multi-player just make sure you export your created characters on a semi-regular basis. you can then import to a mp start intact. BTW I am playing a mage (main character) and 2 mp fighters. With 3 slots left open for game npc's. So you dont have to forgo all interaction.

    Good Hunting
