Thongs are also a ladies undergarment...but since the sandal version of the name has a thin piece of fabric - like a ladies undergarment - it gets the same name. :rolling:

Sandals. Only Americans could come up with a term so inane and pornographic as thong when dealing with footwear as plain as that.

We have had these around for centuries (not always made of rubber) and they are called chappals in hindi.

They're not sandals! Sandals have buckles and straps and are completely different. A jandal just slips on and off.

This just proves regional differences; ppl dwelling around the Pacific Ocean call them jandals, whereas people living on the coasts of the Atlantic call them flip-flops.

Fwiw, the 'thong sandal' predates thong panties by a fair bit - though it appears this term has disappeared.

    *shrug*

I agree wholeheartedly with Harbourboy and besides - thongs are underwear! And sandals have many strange buckles and belts!

I've never even heard of them being referred to as flip-flops before a quick Wikipedia search.

 A thong (afaik) is a narrow leather strap used for various purposes. When I was first introduced to to jandals (or whatever you want to call them) I was told they were 'flip-flops'. I don't think they got the name from the noise they make but if you wear them there is a chance you will flip and flop.

Oh the things we can think to agrue about. :p

Just like Uytuun and Hugo, I'd call them flip-flops in English.

We call them slippers, toe-slippers to be exact, for the small thingy between the biggest toe and the one next to it, I guess.
Never heard of sletsen. Is that Flamish?

West-Flemish dialect. I think it refers to the dragging sound flip-flops can make. Or possibly to the fact that it doesn't really make for a proper shoe.

Sletsen has got a bit of a derogatory connotation to it.

Back in Argentina, we call them 'ojotas', here in Spain, they call them 'chanclas'.
Back in town we make joke with this kind of shoes, as many of you should have experienced, you can't run or even walk backwards using them, so, for people who is 'bad' on sports, we call them (like a joke) ojotas: because they are useless in any sports.

    'I blew out my flip-flop,
    stepped on a pop top,
cut my heel had to cruise on back home.'

If Jimmy Buffett says it's a flip-flop, that's good enough for me.

Margarittaville sounds good right about now....

Thongs always! Never heard of the others before.
And there should be no confusion with womens panties - the pluralisation is surely enough of a distinction between the two.
