[IMG] i know every one knows the basic tactic required to play shadows of amn. Sling of evard on kagaxx, dragon slayer on the dragons, flail of the ages on pretty much every thing else. But how many of you have funny prefrences on fighting people in soa. what i mean is do you like to use certain weapons or spells that for the most part people wouldnt find usefull. take me for example, my favorite class is the bard. i like to skill in axes. i get the boots of haste, and the azuredge to do hit and run tactics and draw enimies into a place where i can use stinking cloud, grease, and greater mailson in a combo to disable them. then i take out my crossbow to kill them all. if one gets to close i dire charm them.
i want to know if any of you have the same funny tactics, altought it may not be the best way i normally find it one of the most fun.

My tactics tend to stick with the "tried and true" variety, but that's only because I lack imagination. If you've found unconventional approaches that make the game more fun for you, then that's all that matters. :)

Oh, and welcome to the Boards. :)

I like to kill dragons using magic only and no melee. So I just send a single warrior to draw his attention (note, he/she never does attack), and have everyone else (cleric, druid, mage... anything goes) cast spells at him. And even when I get Finger of Death, I still shun it in favor of more convoluted spell sequences (Cone of Cold on Firkraag, Flame Strike on the Shadow Dragon, that sort of things). In fact, I have never used Dragon Slayer at all... and I never played with a Cavalier because it just doesn't fit this playing style.

Preference for anything: Use Inquisitor's dispel or breach/pierce magic on anyone I need to do so on. Cast Haste. Hack up all.

My preference is rather boring - hit the enemy with a large piece of metal, unless they're a mage, when you cast Breach on them first.

I personaly prefer going one on one when there is a group similar in size to my own. ie, Minsc vs. warrior, Imoen vs Mage, ect.

When its a dragon or something, I use Alvin's approach.

I, too, prefer the one-on-one approach, Jaguar. Something just seems so right about having six "duels" going on at the same time.

Well i prefer an out-and-out scrum. Everyone piles in (including edwin, aerie etc) and lays about themselves for all they are worth. In the case of the aforementioned characters, that is very little.

As such, my cunning tactics are vulnerable to a single well placed protection spell.

I like hammers. In my opinion you cant go wrong with a hammer. So its only 1d4 damage (right?) means your characters really hard! Grr :p
I dunno why but I love hammers, my lead char always ends up getting one somewhere along the way.
My general tactic is run in with a few guys (and the one with the hamer) and have my mages cast spells and people with bows hang back. And when the mages run out of decent spells they run in too! Hack fest!

send a tank straight into the fray and when they swarm him, cast an area effect spell directly at him. then i send the rest of my melee fighters in to take the pressure off of him and pound already weakened enemies down. i dont know if this tactic is unconventional or just plain cheesy but when im feeling lazy, cast as many mordekainen's swords as i can, haste them and send them to cut everything up. when the spell expires i go pick up the pieces hehe.

I like solo elven assassins, so I sneak in and back stab, run, hide, backstab, run, hide...you get the point..and so do my enemies...Very repeditive but effective. Nothing strange except I like to use Katana's. Or is that strange?

    From general to particular
    - Cast Web and send Minsc with his big sword and the ring of freedom
    - Vick casts hold and smash people with a mace
    - Later: use Skeleton Warriors against lesser monsters, or mages (high MR) It's fun to send Vick with those guys against some mages. They are so powerless.
    - Against Major Mummies and Bone Golems: summon a fire elemental or an aerial servant (very useful)

I usually like to fight with weapons my enemies are using, unless that doesn't work, or I don't have good proficiencies. But it's always fun to hold/entangle/web enemies and rain a Fire Storm/Horrid Wilting/Creeping Doom etc etc on them, heh heh.

I have to use Sunray against undead. I don't care if I have a level 40 cleric that could them turn instantly to dust, or a undead hunter that is in no danger of losing levels... Sunray MUST be cast. Strange preference I'd say.

Same goes for summoned creatures. Since they always fail their saves, I have to kill them in style with such a spell. It could be chromatic orb, slay living, nature's beauty, death spell, finger of death, etc. But I do this for elementals or stronger; the dumb gnolls and stuff I kill in melee.

Well...I solo all the time...so depending on whether I'm an arcane, divine or melee based class, my tactics vary accordingly. :D

Mass-nukage with a Sorcerer IS a favourite but.

Heh, that was one of my favorite BG1 tactics. Send in PC with two Rings of Fire Resistance and drink a Potion of Fire Resistance. Everyone else uses Necklace of Missiles, Oil of Fiery Burning, or Wand of Fire. Baddies get toasted, PC gets healed.

    I called it . . . 'sanitizing'

That was BG1 all over. Cast fireball, then congrats, you have won...shame BG2 is more complex.
