I also think BG is as good and maybe even better then BG2. THat just depends on if you love to play high level chars, or play from the beginning etc. Anyway, you can keep playing great by giving yourself a bit varietion, play some challenging parties, weapon profiencies, NPC's etc, that keeps the game great.

BG1 started in a castle. There was an inn where you could get some simple stuff....

In BG2 you start in a fuc*ing annoying dungeon where it takes ages to get out to the nearest shop and get a good subquest.

BG2 is a bit more linear imho. BG2 world isn't so cool. The city is quite small. There should be more civilian buildings to rob.

Mages were easier to use in BG1. In BG2 you need to buy a f**king license to cast spells.

Starting a new game and trying different characters was easier in BG1 than in BG2.
BG2 is still a bit better in some ways.. Higher levels..

I don't really believe BG1 and BG2 should be compared. What BG2 is, is a continuation of the events told in BG1; at the same time, I believe it becomes more linear because the path you may take narrows, and your destiny as a child of Bhaal closes it's grip around you. BG1, BG2, and TOB are a series. Play all three.

It depends on what you want really. Although I do think BGII is more replayable (if you ignore the 1st dungeon), because it has more kits, and weapon types, and because I like the items more. Still need to try some of those halberds, because some of them are really sweet.

BGI becomes easier as you are longer in the game becase enemy levels are fixed. BGII is more flexible. If you are stronger so are the enemies. In BGI I thought classes like paladin were useless here 2 of the kits are definately worth it. BGII has far more interaction between npc's, but BGI will always be a classic. uhm... I'd have to play BGI again to name the good points, it's been too long.

I think BG1 is as good as BG2, but in a different way. When I bought BG2, I was disappointed with some things, but positively surprised by others.
I don't have the time to point out exactly what now, sadly.

I agree with you, Lukki. I didn't like starting out naked in the dungeon as a level eight; I like playing beginning characters and working up to get to the high levels. I saw that I had to start out as a high level when I first opened the box, and I immediately gave up BG2 for a looong time. I got bored about a month ago and gave it a try, and now I'm glad I did, because it's really a good game.

PS. I still miss all of the wilderness areas in BG1...BG2 has too many cities in my opinion.

[IMG] Get TDD. It adds some cool Locales. I think BG2 Is darker thsn BG1. Like Empire Strikes Back (For exapmle) Irenicus is a sick villian. I REALLY like the actor who does his voice (Forget his name, he's played cardasians in NEXT Gen. before) It makes a cool little story. PLUS, he is SO much more powerful than Savorek, unless you whish silence on everyone. Than he is quite easy to chop up.

What I like more about Bg1 is the sence of freedom it had to offer. I know It could be tiersome to just walk in the wilderness all the time but that made the game have a sertain medieval feeling. I liked that alot about Bg1. Too bad it isnt the same in Bg2.

The cool thing about Bg2 is all the awesome places you will visit instead of the wilderness all the time. It is a shame tho that you cant go back and revisit places via the world map as you get to alot of places thro the story line of the game.
    ---------------------
TDD is an add-in to Bg2. that means that it isnt an x-pack but it adds more stuff to the excisting game. TDD stands for The Darkest Day, Its made from a few fans and it adds alot of new kits, monsters, places to visit and spells, items, scrolls and so on. Oh yeah, it also adds more quests for you.
    http://teambg.db-forge.com/net/tdd/

Go visit there site, there you can also download it. It is big 266mb and It does not work with Throne of Bhaal.

I have downloaded TDD but I have not installed it yet how ever. I will do that eventually. Right now it seems that it contains alot of bugs so I will probably wait til they have released a few patches for it. Then I think it will be great.

i was thinking of posting something like this myself. the problem with bg2 is the lack of wilderness areas. the forest places in bg2 just suck and nothing ever happens there but in bg1 you can battle gnolls with drizzt, find loony cyric worshipers, free people from stone and find sunken houses. it makes it much more explorable

I've only recently bought and started playing BG1 so I've done things backwrds in a manner of speaking (doing even THrone of Bhaal.. which come to think of it I never completed coz the computer was broke and then I went to uni.. back for 2 days).

Here are my findings thus far.

    The Negative

At first the really low level characters can be a pain. Only having 10 hit points is a bit sh*t, I die alot more in BG1.

There are incredibly vast landscapes to explore and at times it gets tiresome. Somethings I would have totally missed had I not consulted a guide.

The plot does not unravel obviously.. perhaps BG2 brought me up the linear way... it's good but hard to readjust to.

    The postive.

The game seems bigger somehow and the levels of intrigue (like the Carnival) are mindblowingly detailed. Unlike in BG2 you geniunley don't know who your fighting or for what reason othe than Gorion's murder.

There's more of a sense of genuine achievement. I've got my cleric up to a level 3 now and its great!

I'm not sure, but I think there's more NPCs and thus alot more decision making. Like between Minsc and Edwin (I was sly I got them both.. see BG1 Board to find out how).

    Conclusion

I think they are both parts of one awesome game. I intend to take my Cleric until the end of Throne of Bhaal (which will take me about a year no doubt given my lack of time for this sort of thing, being a sociable and busy student).

My understanding is that it is a game where you start at lvl 1 just like BG1, but with characters you create. There are no NPC's. I don't know the max levels off the top of my head but I think it is somewhere between the max of BG1 and the max of BG2. It is supposed to be a fighting intensive game that has a plot that is loose compared to BG1 and BG2. Some people complain that the BG games have plots that bog them down, and here comes Icewind Dale and they get upset because it has little plot. Go figure. Anyway it sounds good to me, I hear it has awesome music. I hope to get it soon.

I only played the demo, but I got the feeling there was a fixed route through the game

  19. Yeah, generally Big B got it right there. I must warn you though, don't expect Baldur's Gate. The game is like Diablo, only much better, with AD&D rules. If you're put off by dungeons and mazes, I wouldn't recommend it. Why don't you rent it and see for yourself. The experience cap is 1,801,000 points. With Heart of Winter the cap is raised to 8,000,000. Still not enough? Check SP's IWD hacks.

When you liked BG1 you also will like IWD. When you think BG2 rulez but BG1 is boring, you'd better not buy IWD but directly start with part 2.
