What do you know about closed head trauma?

I posted a topic in book talk asking for detailed
opinions on Ed Greenwood's book 'Elminster's Daughter'. Celesialraven answerd my post. But his reply lacked the detail I needed, So I asked for more info. Celesialraven then gave me a wonderfully detailed opinion to my query. But his
Manner struck me the way a lot of people deal with me in these passed few years. That I am slow,
confused, and unable to mentally keep up with what
is going on around me. Now Celesialraven certainly
did no wrong to me and was the first and only person to respond to my post for which I am most
Thankful.I responded to his help

It just made me think about what I am going through, am I being paranoid? Besides, people who don't know about the accident and don't
spend time with me could'nt know that I have brain trauma. I have fought hard to regain fractions of who and what I was. And it seems others remember even less or they would not treat me as if I have been lobotomized. So if anyone knows anything about this or suffers from such an injury PLEASE SHARE!

 

As an ICU nurse I know some, but not much about the recovery phase. I hope you continue to recover. I do know that patients with closed head injuries often have personality changes. We had a Nun once that cussed up a storm after she got hit by a car, and suffered from a CHI.

 

That sounds familiar Brallrock. After my accident
I became verbally abusive to everyone and began to
use foul language a lot, in front of people whom I hoped would never here such words from me. I am
getting better, slowly. When this first happend I would be with my friends and start to 'have problems'.I would try to explain that I am Losing who I am. personality change is hard to cope with when you are a grown man and are well satisfied with who you are. Thanks for your reply and

The only experience I have of closed brain injuries was my grandmother, who had suffered at least two strokes before I saw her for the last time. She had to be reminded of who I was, a great sadness to see a mind fighting with itself to just function.

I wish you well and would like to wish that the people who meet you, get to know you first before judging you, but sadly that is unlikely people nearly always judge first, and often to their own detriment.

i know largely nothing, but my grandmother had a heart attack when i was younger, and after that she was incapable of speaking danish, being that she was from denmark and that was her only tounge, that was very peculiar. she could still read and write danish though.

Thanks for your well wishes. Sounds like your grandmothers had a rough go of things. It makes me
thankful for my own grandmother's good health as I
am very close to her (I call her Mamaw, we are southern folk heh). My own injury was caused by an
automobile accident. It has destroyed my life. I
lost my savings, my family, my friends, my carrer, and my identity and I am unable to start all over agin. Hell, some days I don't even know who I am. But anyway

 

IIRC, closed head trauma literally shakes up your brain. The brain is wonderful and great, but one brush onto the organ itself (through all that fluid surrounding it) is like static electricity on a computer. *zzzt* The cells that were part of your memory/reflexes/speech/etc. are gone if that bit is what got poked/damaged.

I didn't have much problem after my car/bike accident. Then, I was 9 and kids are different from adults. I did notice my sense of smell was tons better after that incident.

 

I had a mild stroke last year but made a full recovery, aside from a propensity for making typos. I can live with that.

Thank you everyone for your response. It seems that outside of strokes this thing may not be very common. Luckily, I finally found a decent neurologist familiar with this problem. I have started a medication that helps restore normal brain activity. I have also been doing physical therapy to help me relearn certain reflexes. It all appears to be helping, I may not get back to being the man I used to be but maybe I will be a better man than I was. It is'nt the first time I have lost my fortune or my job, but it is the first time I ever lost my wife and daughter. and I am not used to loosing when I have everything on the line. Before I began receiving treatment I didn't give a damn if I ever got any of these things back, but now... Anyway thanks everyone and if you learn anything about this drop me a line.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it's probably more appropriate here than in the TLE thread. @ Bassil - I am very sorry to hear re your injury and the impact it has made on your life - hang in there, and I hope things continue to improve. I can only imagine the frustration you must feel sometimes. My knowledge about postconcussion syndrome is limited to textbooks, sorry. If you have a neurologist who knows it (and more importantly, knows you), then they are probably your best resource. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
