CDROM drive refuses to recognize CD#2 in Ch 6

I am just sick!
Have exited the Underdark and started Chapter6.
Decided to zip back to Nalia's to pick up cash.
Then on to Copper Coronet to unload gems etc and finally construct the Equalizer.
On returning to the city,
fought the Gythnaki wild mages.
Tried to enter Coronet, was prompted to insert Disk 2.
I did so but nothing happens.
Computer hung up and had to use Alt-F4 to esape BG2.
I deleted my Data\Cache, rebooted, inserted CD#1. I am immediately prompted to insert CD#2. The CDROM drive doesn't even access CD#2.

Looking in "My Computer", the CDROM drive doesn't "see" CD#2."Drive not accessible".
It does see all other BG2 and game CDs.
The disc is pristine, no scratches or even dust.

Someone tell me that I don't have to uninstall and reinstall game.

 

try cleaning it anyway... use water and cotton to dry, if that doesnt work... sorry, but that cd might be dead

 

Wouldn't that be a simple solution. Cleaning
didn't help.

I tried my save game in the kids computer. Not a problem. All CDs recognized, no hanging.

Two days ago I updated my virus definitions with NAV. Yesterday, I did a full system scan and made rescue disks.
Could running the antivirus prgram effect the BG2main.exe file or the registry?
(Yes, I have posted on the Interplay Support board..but I have more faith in the minds here)

 

Don't be running any memory resident programs while you are playing BG2, regardless of how powerful your system may be.

I found that running Blanch, a sidebar that pops out from the right side of my screen, always effected my game during play, saving as well as loading.

Now when I play BG2, I always make sure that nothing is running, not even my Seti Screensaver, ICQ, MSM, even Blanch.

Also, this has happened to me a few times at work (we have shitty IBMs) but my CD-ROM acts up every now and then. To test CD2, put it into your CD-ROM drive and reboot. Once your system reloads, check to see if Windows detects the CD off the hard boot.

If you see the volume name for the 2nd CD, try to access it, copy those files to your HD and burn yourself an ISO image or do a direct CD<->CD copy of the original.

I'm a good girl and NEVER have anything running in the background except Explorer and Systray.

Your solution sounds interesting. Technically I am able to make a copy of the disk with the CDRW.
I'll just convince myself that this is an emergency and not copyright infringement

 

Maybe cleaning the cd-rom lens instead of the cd is more helpful. There are cleaning-cds with small brushes on top.
Else rob the cd-roms from your kids. A good cause justifies any means

I did make a copy of Bg2_cd2 and it only worked intermittently.

However, its all moot as the CDROM just died minutes ago.
Doesn't recognize any cds at all.
Time for an early Xmas gift.
