Indeed, like the name sais, halflings are short, and average half size of a tall men. They are normally between 90 and 110 cm iirc.

I'm hoping you're not being serious. If they were half human I think they would be ALOT taller than what they are. The race would also mention what the "something else" was. For instance:
Half-elf = Half Human Half ELF
Half-orc = Half Human Half ORC
    I don't think it is
Halfling = Half Human Half LING

[IMG] duh, yes we reckon. From your perspective, there must exist a compatible humanoid species called a "Ling" which mated with a human to form a halfling. And you're saying "duh" to us.
Halfling is the D&D version of a Hobbit. If you don't know what that is, I would recommend the delightfult book "The Hobbit" (or "There and back again") by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Originally, they were called Hobbits in D&D. Then they were sued.

Hobbit is what they call themselves. Halflings is what they are called in the legends (made by men).

Halfling ia a real race that is not a result two other races like half-elfs and halforcs. They are called halflings by human for they are half the size of a human, half for the size and ling just means something like being.

I agree with mollusken. They're HOBBITS. halfling is the name that we "big folk" give them because that's what we heard the gondorites(?) or is it gondorians(?) call them ;)

Well, that's the Tolkien theory, but I suppose we also use this for D&D games? :)

Xuncle ---> no, it would be three-quartlings, for they then would have an average size of 3/4th the size of a human

I don't know if Silarillion explains the origin of the hobbits, but they're definitely not gnomes. They are a race (not a halfbreed), just like men, elves, orcs, trolls and dwarves. They have too much unique features (hairy feet, very small size, low strenght and constitution, lack of beard) to be a mix of anything.

MD, that is totally wrong. :)

They really are a race that came after humans and elves and dwarves, but there isn't much info about them in the Silmarillion. They are kinda mysterious, It's not for nothing that in the South of ME they where already forgotten.

[IMG] Damn, The Silmarillion's the only part that I haven't read yet... But the intro bout Hobbits in the new edition of The Lord o the Rings was quite extensive.

Well, they talk HALF as loud as you do.

R'syil, you really miss something, the Silmarillion is a great story (devided in many short stories) and contain much background-information on Lord of the Rings. Read this book and then LoTR again, the book will be much clearer on many parts.
