A student from China has been arrested in Japan for trading RPG goods at an Internet auction outside the boundaries of his student visa (without obtaining the necessary residency status). Here's a snip:

KUMAMOTO -- A university student from China has been arrested for illegally engaging in business activities outside the restrictions of his student visa, police said.

Wang Yue Si, 23, came to Japan on a student visa in April 2004. He started selling items such as weapons and currency for online games through an Internet auction site in April this year, without obtaining the appropriate residency status.

So for the slow among us...me...he was selling RPG weapons and items for actual US dollars?

Subquestion: what kind of a cheater-pants pays actual money for items in a game they didn't earn?

Yeah, real money. But yens, not dollars. It was in Japan. And more here about game currency trade. Some people want to keep up with their less hard-working but more time-having fellow players and they achieve that by paying for items or currency in real cash. Personally, I've seen Warcraft III accounts with high stats purchased from the real guys by other people.

Yeah! Good for him... Except that he got arrested for it because it violated the rules of his student visa. Getting arrested kind of sucks. On a completely unrelated issue I think I need to change profession.

Seriously - If I knew I could make $1 million/year selling "+20 Swords of Infinite Uber Pwnage" on Ebay - I'd stay home and playing WoW all day!!

Why would they take it away? Just because he created a sucessful money makeing system, and more money the police probably did in there whole life... that would sort of fill you with spite wouldn't it?

They will probably just tax and fine him... It the cheapest way to deal with things. A legal battle would be a waste of money.

As a total aside, years ago I won a Demon Stone poster from here and I still haven't gotten it Tal... I cry myself to sleep every night hoping beyond hope that it will come in the morning. But it never does. *sniff*

Lots of countries have their criminal laws framed in such a way as to compel forfeiture of illegal profits upon conviction. Its only a question of if Japan has the same.
