Which party formations do you use?

Hi,

Replying to an earlier thread got me thinking about party formations.

I tend to use the staggered line for indoors and the 2x3 and 3x2 for open indoors and outdoor use.
I don't use the other options much at all.

All of my characters so far have been fighter types and so it feels right to have them at the front.

What formations do you use? and why do you prefer them?

I created a sorceror last night have reading all the positive feedback on this forum and found that there was a staggered line with the lead character in the middle of the line, and it seemed to work well in the first dungeon.

In dungeons I usualy use the 2x3 one because if I use the 3x2 none of my characters can get throught the doors so they turn around and go different ways and stuff like that. Outside I use the 3x2 because I usualy have 3 characters I like to use for the front lines and the rest ether use magic or ranged weapons.

 

I've never used anything but 2 x 3. I have no other use for anything else. I have who I need up front in case of an encounter. The rest are usually for distance (range/magic use).

 

Inside, I use the 2x3. Outside, I use the T-shaped formation with the 3 fighter types in front, two spell-casters in line behind them, and Jaheira right behind them, guarding their six. For areas with long, narrow hallways, I use the vertical line formation.

 

I always use 3x2, because I like to have my main mage well protected in the middle of the back line, and I usually have at least three people who can fight. Besides, the power of tradition holds me with an iron grip...

 

I used to do 3x2 with a full party, and now do a 2x2 with 4 members.
Generic, unstrategic planning.

 

I usually use the circle formation, with the Party Leader in front. That is if I'm in big open areas. In small and long halways I either use the straight line or the arrow formation.

 

I use the 2x3 offset (staggered line?) formation when in narrow corridor type areas. Otherwise I tend to use either the circle or the ring around the weakling formation. I like the latter formation because it keeps the bad guys from targetting on Aerie/Edwin/Jan/whoever I put in the middle (especially during those annoying area transition and cut scene starts to battles. The tanks get the front three positions and the sturdier spellcasters get the back two. It also opens up a little more space between the characters, which can be useful. Sometimes it causes AI problems with characters stopping a long way from their destination or going a really wierd path, but that happens with just about any formation to some extent.

I always use the fromation somewhat like 2X3, but the in a S-shape, like it is also called in Torment. I always have the weaker partymembers in the back and the strong tanks in the front.

2x3

 

In wide open areas (rare as they are in BG2) I prefer the spread out V shape with the mages at either end, the archer/thief type in the back, and the heavy hitters front and center. I like the staggered 2x3 for tighter areas. I also use the tight V shape too, where the head of the party is at the back. I stick the weaker chars back there, and the fighters up front.

 

I use always the T formation. I think it is the best, but i am also Paladin.
