The very idea of using a game like Neverwinter Nights to teach students literacy would never occur to most people, but teachers in Nottinghamshire College are doing just that. Here's a snip from BBC News:

The new game, aimed at disaffected learners, was launched at this week's Bett show on educational technology at London's Olympia.

Nigel Oldman, who helped transform the game into a learning tool fitting in with the national curriculum, said the college needed to take drastic measures to tackle their "disaffected students".

He said: "The little Herberts had realised that not attending their literacy and numeracy key skills classes was not going to affect their vocational qualifications."

Just makes you proud. The generation that is growing up now is not lost. They just interact with the world differently than older people.

Instead of being taught something, youngsters have for far too long been convinced that they know something. There's a difference here and one for which positive thinking will not cover.

As for NWN, any tool is good that works if it's not immoral or otherwise harmful. Interesting, innovative methods tend to work. Kids are quite into novelties. Remember when films were being introduced? I don't think watching TV in classroom was highly regarded when it was first introduced.

I think it's a fantastic idea, especially regarding the results which are already encouraging. I just think it's funny how he refers to British college students, (Age 16+) as "little herberts"

A good idea, yes but what I find sad is that something similar isn't implemented in the early grades. Too bad that the first few years of school can't be more interesting and fun. Children like to learn and are natural investigators.

Nakia is right, my kids were told that they could not play Hack the then big game unless.... they could read and say corectly the words in the game. The faq and manual on the computer helped too as they had to know how to use the machine and understand what they read. My younger grandkids eyes got big as the moon when handed a Dan Simpson walkthrough and told "the answer is in here" but they found it and at least 4 heads were around my notebook. Reading the words on the screen is a challenge with older ones helping out at times. By the way, 21 for chips helps teach smart preschoolers math too. Just don't let the nutcase see who will blast you for letting them "gamble".

[IMG] This is excellent. I wish I could get in contact with the faculty who came up with this. I wonder if they will upload this to the Vault or somewhere else?

Hey, it works when kids are crazy to play a game and it's a good one! It was BG II if I remember at the time that grandkids were playing.
