I am looking at pci express graphics cards and dont want to go over 200 bucks, is the radeon x700 pro or nvidia 6600 gt either good cards? Is there a better one for the same price?

I'm an ATI man through and through, I have a Radeon X800 Pro($400), but I have to admit that the NVIDIDA GeForce 6600 is an excellent graphics card, and it's a good deal for the money. Later, along the road, you can get another 6600 and connect them in an SLI configuration.

Trust me, if you can, go with the NVIDIDA GeForce 6600.

Here's a fairly thourough review of the 6600

    And another...

I personally think Ati has the superior design. But Nvidia, by far and large, supports their cards better.

The 6600 GT, in the PCI-E flavor, is an outstanding card for the price. Pricewatch has it for under $200, if you're so inclined.

But the 6600 has the SLI capability, while the X700 doesn't, right?

I'd say the step-down versions of the two "Ultra-cards" are about the same. I do think that the 6800 Ultra is better than x800, but for the mid-class one's it won't make much of a difference. I'd say go for the better bargain money-wise, which would probably be the an X600. You can find a pretty good one here: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-419&depa=0 or, for a better one, here: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-429&depa=0

Eh, those cards suck. The 6600 really outperforms them.

    See?

Um...forgive the noobishness, but I've been out of the loop for a while here.

PCI-E cards are better than AGP 8x? If so...can I get one for a laptop at purchase?

Thanks to all who responded. I think the 6600 is my choice. I will post my thoughts on it when it arrives. Again thanks!

    No problem.

Faraaz, I don't think PCI-E is out for laptops just yet, considering the downgraded X800 Chip(In the form of the 9800 Pro) was just released for mobile platforms. It'll be a few months till PCI-E comes out for notebooks I suspect.
