[IMG] I just signed for Telefonica's ADSL 1MB pack which includes digital TV and national phone calls for free, but the catch is that when using ADSL I have a limit download of 1GB. So the question is: they know what I download or just the size?
    Just curious.

I'm fairly certain it's just the size, collecting information on what you're downloading is a breach of privacy, as i see it.

There are records of (mostly) everything, it's just highly unlikely that anyone would go investigate you specifically, unless it was part of a criminal investigation.

Since I'm working for an ISP I can tell you the following. Because of legal reasons all connections are recorded - this means your IP and the target IP of the connections.

But basically no one cares about this sort of data. It must be kept for a certain period because of a) proof for charging ("Hey guys, I won't pay your bill, I never d/loaded 90GB in a month") and b) the possibility of legal persecution. (child porn, anyone ?)

Well, if the limit is mere 1 gig, they sure have fooled you for good. It's enough for regular surfing, but when you get serious 1 gig is like a drop in ocean. Really bad deal, IMO, if I understood this correctly.

Like other have already said: it's just the size. If they started making any, more accurate recordings, they would be drowning in lawsuits.

Wirhe, I'm sure that you are aware that different companies offer different connection packages, and that you pay in proportion to your connection speed and your download limit. How can you say that he's been fooled, if you don't even know how much he downloads, and more importantly, how much he's paying for it?

Or the time period. If he can download 1 gig per day, that's a heck of a lot of data. Even a gig a week is more than enough.

The deal is as it follows: is 3 'things' pack: digital tv (54 channels, Imagenio); every call, anywhere in Spain is for free (but you have a limit of 2 hours 'conversation' but you can hang and call again if you don't want to be charged and calls to mobiles are charged); and ADSL 1MB connection, the 1GB limit is for the month; all this for 36 Euros/month, until today, I was paying almost 120 Euros every 2 months just for the phone and the 56k internet connection and we don't use the phone that much. The 1GB limit is not a problem, because every 1GB extra worths just 5 euros; I could choose no download limit but the price will go to 65 euros. Same if I wanted 2MB speed, so, as 1MB speed is a very good connection for us and we have no problems with 1GB, we choosed this package. Besides, there is a war between (among?) the 3 providers here (Amena, Telefonica and Jazztel, there are 4 or 5 more but they all 'belong' to Telefonica) and there are more problems that good packages or deals for the client.

They are already in that part because they don't give what they promise, if you want to finish the deal with them, they cut the service but charge you 3 or even 6 month saying that is for the 'post service' and you can't sign up for any other provider. Telefonica has about 35000 lawsuits, Amena has almost 50000, but everything lost in the burocratical limbo.

    @ Colthrun

Easily; my own connection costs ~20 euros, speed is about 1 meg, and no limits. In a "good" month I can use about 50 gigs of bandwidth, so offering 1 Gb + 1 Gb/5€ feels like highway robbery. Besides, remember that I'm talking from the POV of Finland, where no ISP sets any limits to how much you use Internet.

    Finland sounds like broadband paradise.

In Spain, Telefonica has the majority of customers and, as you could see by Sydax's description, they are a bunch of b******s, as any state-wide company of any country I've lived in. The Irish national phone company, Eircom, offers phone and broadband packages starting from €65.

In any case, note that he is getting digital TV, flat rate phone calls and also broadband for just €36/month. I'd kill for that. I connect via cable modem with NTL. I get 1Mb download speed and no bandwith restrictions, plus cable TV for €45/month.

Sadly, robbery is something usual with teleoperators here, few days back, a law was approved stating that we can't pay anymore for 2 minutes if we talk 1.20 minutes, same with parkings, you can't pay half hour (the minimum charge) if you used 20 minutes of parking. So what Telefonica, Vodafone and Amena did was to rise the cost, so if you payed 0,06 euros per minute (even if you spoke 30 seconds) now it costs 0,09 and they said that they have to pay for new systems that recognise and calculate costs per seconds instead of minutes as they were.
And there are a lot of more (free cell phones per points gather never given, etc.)

Digital TV is the new, free standard around here and no one pays a penny about it (except in taxes). TeleFinland offers 500 mins of free telephone time and NO monthly fees, and one extra minute costs about 0.029 €. Broadband you know.

    Paradise, I'm telling you.

    @Cúchulainn: aye, I wouldn't touch BT with a two-meter long rusty pole.

Aww... I rarely get to see 1 meg per sec and uploading speed is even lower, there's a 15 gig limit and they charge 20 euros with charge plus taxes and the obligatory cable TV, making it all cost more than 40 euros.

I'm staying at a university-owned accomodation, and I've got ~4.4Mbit/s connection (that's as in effective bandwidth, not theoretical connection speed). Only problem is, I don't have my own PC yet to abuse it :(

I currently have a 1.5MB DSL standalone connection with no download limit for about $35 a month.

I can't wait until Verizon expands into Utah. Qwest (the owner of all local phone lines here) is going to have some serious compteition against Verizon's all optical cabling network.

When two or more major companies compete, we (the customers) usually get better deals. I for one, will be switching over to Verizon DSL as soon as it's available. I hate Qwest. :flaming: :rolling:
