    The Kensai.
His attack bonuses make him the most hard hitting and accurate character ever. His Kai ability just adds to that.
With his enhanced weapon initiative, a Kensai always strikes first and with his afore-mentioned offensive power, is usually enough to take out the enemy before they have a chance to retaliate.
However, his horrible AC makes him an easy target for archers and multiple opponents, so a Kensai should carry around defense potions and wear as many protective rings, cloaks and amulets as possible. Boots of speed are also to be desired to close the distance to archers or to disengage from multiple opponents and hence string em out and kill em one by one.
Besides, it's just soooo cool leaping into battle without armour and seeing your enemies explode into body parts faster than a paladin or barbarian can manage.

[IMG] Paladin or a Cavalier is my first choice...But only because they're my favorite.

After hearing about it on the boards so much, I have to admit the Kensai dualed to Mage is pretty nice (deferring to Shura - Don't get used to it, it won't happen often :D) The Kai move is sweet, coupled with spell ability - They can do some major damage! AC's a little weak, but you can augment that with spells. Add dual wield with that Celestial Blade, and Crom Faeyr and you can do some serious thumping!

I want to try a Barbarian, Monk and Skald - mostly because they sound interesting to play.

Definitely: dc kensai-thief. With backstabbing (5x damage), grandmastery AND kai abilty he´s formidable.
Additionaly he´s excepionally useful for the party when gathering xp while opening locks and disarming traps, when scouting for the party and killing the mage in a group of enemies first .... and I think he really is most fun to play.

Othr interesting classes: dc kensai-mage, followed by the cavalier and the not-in-BG2-tried mc mage-thief. I think a pure kensai, a monk and a dwarven barbarian are real asskikrs too.

Elven archer with a dexterity of 19.
He can put five stars into ranged weapons and gains bonuses at the same rate as Kensai (+1 to hit and to damage every three levels) and thus he can wear leather armor.
But swords do more damage that bows.

My fav class would be a bard (Jester), basically because bards are fun to play, and they are very versatile; you get a little bit of everything. Bards also have a lot of lore, which make them walking identify-spells. Give a bard a bunch of protection spells, and a Tenser's Transformation, and lo & behold; you have a interesting fighter.
(And they're the only class in BG who gets to play the lute :D)

You won't be dual-wielding if you're a Kensai Mage though. The best level to dual is at Kensai level 9 so you can gain enough Mage levels to use level 8 spells.

You simply don't have enough proficiency points for 2 weapons and dual wield.

It'll have to be a pure Kensai with 5 pts in one weapon and 3 pts in another and 3 in 2 weapon style.

I also think that dualwielding isn´t really the kensais way to fight - I prefer single weapon style for the improved chace for acritical hit and the AC bonus.

My fav weapons for a kensai-char are katanas and longswords, followed by daggers (from a thiefs point of view ;) )

The kensai reminds me of the old DUALIST character that Dragon magazine rolled out in the '80's.

If they would make a saber and sword-breaker in BG, they would rock!

In the effort of returning to the topic...

My personal fave is the monk: low AC, increase in speed (after a while you walk around as though you had boots of speed!), cool spells (stunning blow), not to mention the...ahem...different animations.

P.S. Beware all you armor-wearing, weapon-wielding would-be fighters: prepare to be struck down by the energy of my ki! :p

    [IMG] Time to wake up!
Putting five proficiency slots into one weapon skill is a waste!

Three slots is optimal for almost all weapons. You get no more THAC0 bonus or attacks per round with the 4th or 5th slot. In Baldur's Gate it was well worth it to get the 5th proficiency, but not so in BG2!

The point with using Celestial Fury and Crom Faeyr dual wielded with the dc Kensai/Mage is that Crom Faeyr gives you 25 strength. The extra attack from it is just a bonus and besides with that strength bonus even with no proficiency in War Hammer you'll hit now and then. ;)

That said this proficiency distribution is ok for a dc Kensai-9/Mage-17:
    Katana***
    Dual wield***
    War Hammer**
    Quarterstaff**

[IMG] Favourite class? Any mage really...

    dc Kensai/Mage:
    No comment needed. :)

    dc Fighter/Mage:
Compared to the Kensai/Mage this one gets to use shield, bracers, helm and missile weapon.

    Sorcerer:
The first time I played a sorcerer I was very pleasantly surprised at the versatility you get from a sorcerer provided you choose the correct spells.

    Skald:
Bards make good secondary mages. Thanks to using the rogue experience table they get their spells fast.
All Bard kits are better than the original Bard, but I like the Skald best.
    Excellent bard song!

[IMG] OKay...lets get back on topic please?

I personally love the Inquistor...He has the immune to charms and diseases i think it was.

I wouldn't mind trying out the monk...anyone who has tried them, can you guys tell me how good he is compared to an Inquistor?

Once you get the Monk's magic resistance he becomes amazingly powerful.. When I reached the exp cap with him if I encountered a group of Beholders I'd just let the monk take them all on himself :)

Best class in the game imo :p

[IMG] yeah, IMHO the monk is one of the better classes, the increased movement and the MR makes the monk a very powerful foe. Doing a d20 damage with an 18 strength can hurt alot.
Quivering palm is kinda neat, annoying when it fails though.
    Thats my two cents.

I personally love the dc kensai-thief (in the unpatched german version with the fashionable shadow-armor :D ).

I think the monk is awesome - though despite his special abilities he plays pretty much like a swashbuckler (hide in shadows, moving silent ...). His immunity to normal weapons, faster movement and magic resistance though are special advantages of their own :)

Barbarians; Cavalier, Undead Hunters, Inquisitor (threat optimised pallys for dragons/ vamps/ mages); specialised Priests; Archers; Sorcerers Kensais and Swashbucklers do also offer a good "bang for the buck" :)

any mage class, but especially - just a "regular" mage. i didn't choose mages for any special abililties, great proficencies, etc.
you'll all agree mages are hard to adventure with in low levels, but that's exactly what makes it fun. with a mage (at any level) every fight isn't just about hacking and slashing, strategy always plays a major part (at least for me). besides, a lot of times major opponents are high class mages or have magic abililties, and i find being a mage the most interesting way of dealing with them.
in conclusion, best class isn't about best stats - kensai-mage - it's about best role playing and gaming fun.
