I recently bought a new PC that runs xp media center and I was looking through some of my old game cds and came across Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. I was able to install it by changing the compatibility thing. But when I went to play it, the strangest sound related issue I have ever seen (or heard) happened. Only the background sounds play. No voices. I am wondering if this is a sound card issue or some other issue .... I have all updated drivers and direct x and so on. This game came out during windows 95 and directx 5. Any help would be apreciated

Some of the older stuff doesn't work on XP, the programs aren't compatible with the NT that XP uses I think.

Hmmmmm ..... I just installed Torment and all of the sound effects, ambient sounds, and music are fine. But there seems to be an issue with voices .... even after adjusting audio settings. I either do not hear all the voices or they are weak.

Is there an area in hardware or software where voice processing is done? If so, can it be tweaked?

I found that for Torment, in the audio settings, turning off EAX support solved all my sound issues for that game

Does this mean that my sound hardware is not soundblaster compatible?

Most non-SB sound cards are "loosely" SB-compatible. EAX is a proprietary standard if I remember right, so it usually doesn't work properly on non-SB cards or chipsets.

Well isn't that nice. The audio on my new computer is outstanding for music and movies, so I can't see putting in a sound card just for an old game. (laughing) Should've never got rid of that old computer.

EAX alone isn't really worth buying an SB for.

Try disabling hardware acceleration on your sound card. Go to Start->Run-> dxdiag->Sound (IIRC) and slide the bar to off. Load the game again and see if it works. In a lot of cases I've found that that does the trick.

I can't even install Tomb Raider 1 and 2 on my laptop.

    Waste of money, that was...
