I ended up trying to run two greedy applications (old Dos-era game and WMP) at the same time and had to 'three finger salute' into the Task Manager to shut one down. It openED into 'Processes' rather than applications, and I saw a whole MESS of stuff - mostly relating to anti-virus & other TSRs. But this made me wonder if I've got stuff running that I shouldn't; duplicated stuff, etc.

(Oh, and this might be more applicable for Techno Magic, and I won't object if a mod decides to close/move it, but it seems silly enough to be here - kinda like "What's under your Ctrl+V?" :D )

EDIT: corrected a typo above that changed the connotation of a whole sentence - it's important to proofread

66 tonight. Don't know why, but perhaps that is why my computer is slow at points.

I dunno why, but I haven't been able to see my processes for a while. I use the three-finger-salute and it just shows the applications with no tabs to anything else. Any help for this?

I had 36 at the time of the poll's creation, and today after a few reboots & my monthly defrag, I've got 34.

What piques my curiosity is that I've got FIVE "svchost.exe"s running - does WinXP need all that, or is it merely leaving things it doesn't need anymore open and hogging my system resources? :hmm: That and the *last* item on any list I bring up is "System Idle Process"

And ChickenIsGood? It may depend on what version of operating system you've got; I think this multi-tab Task Manager came in with Win NT/2K/XP, but my (organic) memory is so faulty...

Anyways, as Dragonfly opined, it's turning out more interesting than I'd first expected! :D

I have Windows XP and since I wasn't able to view the processes through it, I decided to download Process Explorer. It's a pretty interesting little program and I've been wanting some of that information for a while.

Well, now I feel vindicated if I compelled you to look around and find the app you needed to check this stuff out.

You need to doubleclick empty space in the window frame to switch view modes in the task manager.

Only 43 right now. But that's because I've only got 2 programs running. On a typical night, it would be higher. :rolling:

I got 45 in Windows Task Manager.
Yet Security Task Manager showed 76 in normal view (including all the .sys files) and 330 in "Windows Processes" view (including all dlls and sys files running)!

...kind of shows like most other Windows things, they do it half-arsed, by trying to hide all the "important" stuff from the average user.

Dunno about Process Explorer, but to find out what all those svchosts are doing, just open the Command prompt and type:

    tasklist /svc

Da Rock...you're looking too far in to this thread's question. I don't think 90% of have the patience to count anything other than what's in the Task Manager...and even that was a stretch for my patience. :rolling:

    You got me, Kitrax

I've got 39 running... and I'm just as curious as jaded empath... I too have 5 "svchost.exe"s running (2 "SYSTEM", 2 "NETWORK SERVICE", and a "LOCAL SERVICE")

hmmm, how do you know which ones are suspicious?

My desktop has 25 processes, when no extra applications are running. The laptop has somewhere between 40 - 50, because it has a lot of applications running and some junk installed by the manufacturer.

It was mentioned above, use Process Explorer, which is available as a download from Microsoft, it is a handy tool with nice features. Alternatively type the command "tasklist /svc" in the command prompt. I would recommend Process Explorer though.

I don't just mean the svchost executables. I mean from the entire processes... if there are bugs or anything. Obviously, typing in "tasklist/svc" only makes the program look at the svchost executables.

Process Ecplorer? I thought it only shows the processes running on your PC, more like the task manager (I guess I'm not that keen with technology)

44 processes and I only bothered checking via task manager. I'm using the blackbox unix-like shell for winXP, it's pretty damn cool.
