I find those comments very silly. Ireland has been invaded by Greeks, Italians, Normans and we do not speak Greek, Italian nor French.

When England was invaded by 'William the Conquerer' they did not abandon English and start speaking French. It makes you wonder...

It it was not for Europeans and Asians, all Americans would not not have many movies to re-make and claim as their own idea.

 

To be fair some of the replies were positive and I myself would hate to be told how to vote, but I would not send back such abusive replies!

 

I would personally quite like an American media campaign to tell Britain how to vote. It would show that American's aren't as insular as perceived and do actually give a damn about the world at large.

Was it someone on here that said there wasn't the slightest mention in the States of the British election four years ago, or was that the BBC website?

Still, it was a completely stupid thing of the Guardian to do, though I imagine the letters would have been more amusing if they'd come from the Sun/Star readership.

did they now? uh, no they didnt - because that is illegal - people are protected by that under the harassment clauses in the anti social behavour act. the letter I wrote had to be sent to the guardian offices in manchester and then they passed it on, dont tell me the way it is when i myself am a guardian reader and i took part in the campaign. you expressed interest and then they sent you the rules.

this to me is just another sign that the world is right about the people of the US: they dont know what what is going on in the world, nor do they care.

 

I heard a great story once when I was in the Navy. Two American sailors were in a bar in London. Being proud, American sailors they were wearing their Crackerjack's (the popcorn treat was named after the uniform, the picture on the box is fairly accurate -- dixie cap, big scarf, and a shirt with a big flap in the back).

Most ornamental items on a uniform have historic significance, so one of the Brit's in the bar asked, "What are the two stars on that flap for?"

"That would be for the two times we kicked British ASS!"

I was told the fight was rather enjoyable.


Americans are quite cocky when it comes to the British. By the way, it was a combined effort from the Royal Air Force and the Army Air Corps (in particular the precision bombing of the B-17's) that kept the German's from developing nuclear capabilities. Perhaps the following quote may sound familiar:

"Never have so many owed so much to so few."

For those of us Americans out here I would recommend reading "The Ugly American" to get a glimpse how some of the world sees us.

 

It's funny - I've always liked meeting people from other countries...It's the average American that scares the hell out of me!!

 

The brits I've known are downright decent people.

 

I have fought beside several men from several countries in the first Persion Gulf War. All brothers in arms to myself and my company. The British were like old friends, never had a problem with one. Let us not be so narrow minded to believe that the beliefs and ignorance of a few (no matter where they are from), should indicate how that entire country is. To sit in this forum and make statements about peoples teeth, attitudes, moral thoughts is to make blind observations. I have no problems with the British, if someone else does that is there problem. As far as Bush and Blair, well they are the two who have formed this alliance against terror. Remember, everyone lost a piece of themselves on 9-11, whether countryman(woman), or just sadness, we should worry about those who are willing to kill, and harm anyone other than those that do no believe in their cause. I know there are alot of people in this world who look at America as a war mongering, money grubbing, power hungry country, BUT to all of those out there who criticize us, if your backs were against the wall, you livelihood and life at stake and you had one country you could choose to stand beside you regardless of what happened, who would it be? There is no right or wrong answer to this, and it may not be the U.S. but I think regardless of the answers I get, down deep the U.S. it really the first choice.

 

I've worked with British armed forces, had collegues that were British, my aunt is from London (somewhere -- I can never get the exact location right). My grandmother's maiden name was even Windsor. I am quite fond of the British (especially Lord British ).

Just don't tell us how to run our country (it was tried before with even less success).

 

Yes, and it is unfortunate that they did. It would be kind of like if Shrub went to Iraq and started telling the people there what kind of government they should have. We all know that that would never happen. There are some here who don't get the picture that Brits are dying alongside Americans in a war that is not even theirs. The ignorance of those who just don't get it is even more unfortunate.
