I am in Windspear and running into quite a few vampires for the first time. I am having problems killing these beasts without one of my main characters being level drained. My party neither has a cleric nor paladin.

1. What's the best defence against level drain?

2. What's the best offensive weapon against Vampires?

Party.. human/fighter, halfelf/ranger, minsc, thief NPC, the other chick figher/druid, and the thief/mage. Forgot the names.

There are some items that protect you from level drain such as amulet of power, I think your ranger should also be able to cast negative plane prot. from a scroll. The best offensive item vould prabably be upgraded Mace of Disruption or something that does additional damage to udead or evil creatures such as Carsomyr +5.

 

IIRC, Carsomyr doesn't protect you from level drain, though I might be worng, I rarely use it in the game (it's a problem with paladins), but all the above suggested items are good for fighting vampires.

I know this may be a little off topic, but the question has come to me when reading this thread. If any of your characters gets level drained, does he/she still gain XP points? I mean, if you wait a little to restore him/her and you kill some monsters, does he/she still earn the experience?

The game keeps counting the experience but you need a scroll of restoration to restore it, just like the game keeps counting the XP if you hit the X-CAP but you need a XCAP-remover to be able to use it.

Carsomyr doesn't help vs level drain, but I think Keneth means Carsomyr does a lot of damage vs undead.

As for protection vs level drain: (spoilers ahead)
{Upgraded mace} of disruption protects you.
(mace from bodhi's lair, with the Illithium from the sir charles quest of the temple taken to Cromwell)
{Amulet of power} protects you (You get it from Aran linvail in the main quest)
{Scroll of protection from undead} this is probably the most powerfull item. It's available at all temples and the adventure mart, but it might not be fun for you to play with, also it messes up dialogs with undead enemies because they ignore you
{negative plane protection} It's a priest spell, has a short duration and I personally never use it because it always fades before I get all the undead killed.
{Restoration} preferably greater, this is not a way of preventing being level drained but a way of curing it. Remember to rememorize all spells after using it.

Right, I forgot that one.
Remember to Apply the sorcerer's patch on azuredge because it will fix a lot of problems with the weapon.

More protections from level drain:

Scrolls of Protection from Undead - use one on one of your fighters and have him/her solo the vampires.

IIRC, a barbarian's Enrage ability also protects against level drain.

 

I also named scroll of prot. undead

Barbarian rage indeed works well, you can even rage when protected by a scroll of prot. magic.
Usefull for the twisted rune, magic immunity and level drain immunity

This is the sorcerer's fixpack and not ToB compatible yet, although I believe that specific fix is (AX1H10.itm)

The fix on Azuredge includes two files actually: AX1H10.ITM and MACEDIS4.EFF.

Files needed for any fix are written down inside the FixesList files inside the brackets with each subtitle.

Most of the items that you guys are talking about (other than Azuredge) cannot be found until Chapter Three or later, which is after most people do the Windspear Hills.

If your cleric has level 4 or 5 spells (don't remember which), negative plane protection will make you immune to level drain, but it doesn't last long. Try luring them out one at a time and hasting your fighters, that may help.
