    @ Aikanaro:
    Your reply to my post is a good example of my point. If you think you can say whatever you want and never be challenged, berated, corrected, contradicted, or stigmatized you are probably an European. In the real world these things happen.

    @Bassil Warbone: In most of Europe, it is understood that you have freedom of speech, but be prepared to be challenged or corrected.

    On the original topic: It is also generally understood that you don't have a right to expression, e.g. you can't demand to have a letter to the editor printed in the newspaper. It's up to the staff to decide whether they want to print your comments.

    If freedom of speech did not exist, neither would BoW ;)
    Seriously though, you can't say what you want if it ofends someone else (usually a culture or ratial group). In some countries though, your best not to say anything :heh:

    There is a difference between an off-hand remark to someone and defaming their character. Defamation of character is illegal in the USA. A person's reputation is important.

    Freedom of speech was guaranteed in the US constitution for political reasons to make it possible to criticize the government without fear of repercussions.

    I do not have either the legal or moral right to say things about someone else that are not true and are potentially damaging to his or her reputation.

    Just a quick clarification -- it is generally not illegal to defame someone in the sense that it is not a criminal act (usually). What defamation actually is in the modern world is a civil wrong that can expose the person doing the defaming to damages (including punitive damages). So, it's generally dumb but not illegal.

    The internet saved freedom of speech in America. Without it, everything you see and hear would be controlled by the big media companies. The next big fight will be over the internet because we all know the media companies wish to control that as well. If they have their way, the public will be left with no forum at all. The internet has become the public forum which those in power despise (because they can't control it).

    Of course, you can always "start your own media outlet." :rolleyes:

    Yes, Of course, it is impossible for anyone to create thier own internet website, blog, or work in oh, say, the news editorial/annalist field. :rolleyes: :bigeyes:

    If you have the talent you will find some political sodajerk organization to back a well organized venture.

    @Bassil:

    Sorry! My first paragraph was a direct answer to you, the second was a general answer to the thread. I should have said so. :o

    No worries mate, I sometimes don't realise that I am on the same page as another poster until I take time to put things into context. Sometimes I don't take that time :heh:
    And as you can see I am often out of line with comments like
