Ok i've had age of kings (with expansion) since my very first computer and it ran fine on that one. Then when i've tried to play it since (on newer computer) it has the habit of crashing me back to the desktop (no error message or anything like that) every so often, sometimes 5 minutes into a game sometimes an hour. I have to save reguarly and it's just a pain to finish games now, which is annoying because it's a good game.

So anyone have any ideas of things i can try? I've tried various support pages but none had the help i needed, and since i thought it more likely that someone here would have an idea (and a quicker response) i decided to ask here. Hope someone has a way to fix this.

[IMG] I have Win 98 and it works fine. hmm. All those seem fine as I can run my game on them. Is it the Kings campaignes, Conquerers campaigns, or random maps and stuff?

Have you installed all the appropriate patches and tried different drivers for your videocard?

    erm...
Try the patches (that I didn't know of :xx: )
    Ah!
Try restarting the computer, then leave it for about five minutes before you open it. Don't do anything just let the computer be a while. Worked for me

Im running it under latest patch and it happens mostly on standard games (any of them, random, deathmath, regicide etc). I'd just reinstalled most of the stuff on my comp (after i formatted my hard drive) and so i might need to check for my video drivers. If that doesn't work i'll just try to live with it.

Installed newest video drivers and it worked without crashing for about an hour and a half. Then it crashed me back to desktop. I think it's just my video card doesn't like it *sigh*

erm, Windows 98SE, what do you think... it is one of the most unstable OS, I would advice to upgrade to 2000 or XP

It probably doesn't make a difference, but i always install a no CD patch, so that i don't need the software anymore. CD Roms need cleaning every once in a while, but that's no longer an issue with a no CD patch. It might work.

I think Win98SE is WAY better than xp, Morgoth
But 2000 is a good idea...

Pac Man - do you know of a no cd patch for Aoe2? or were you just speaking generally?

[edit] No cd in drive. Cd not even needed except at start up. Still crashes. Therefore it's not the cd hmm.

You know Fallen, Windows 98SE is far too unreliable to be a good OS, unless of course you know how to use it. Windows XP is more User-friendly and designed more for office and computer-illiterate people. However, I use XP on all three of my machines (it's better for my network.) I dual-boot my server with 2000 because it will work with some of my older games.

On another note, just so you know bonzo, I've used www.gamecopyworld.com and most of their patches are very unreliable, and most of them were viruses. Keep in mind that though they were not very severe (i.e. "Hello Kitty" and the "Code Red" worm) they were cause enough to format all of my machines. The same is true with many of the No-CD patches out there. www.megagames.com is one site that is designed for things like this, and they extensively test their patches and make sure that they work. They also make sure that you actually HAVE the game before allowing you to install it (it identifies the CD, as many cracked games can't read the CD after install).
