It's the only FPS I've ever played or owned together with it's sequel. From my frame of reference I can't make a judgement, but I had loads of fun with both of them.

:jawdrop: You are kidding right? :hahaerr:
http://www.planethalflife.com/half-life/ has lots of info about the game, its mods and its sequels.

Along with Quake II, Half Life was for a very long time the most famous PC First Person Shooter out there. 3D world and decent graphics however, dont explain the cult following it generated.

How was Half Life different from other FPS's?
It was scary without resorting to low light awful graphics. It had a throughly unlikely story. And your charecter actually had a name: Gordan Freeman.
And its online play actually worked.

Get it played. Get it finished, start to end. You will never, ever have another gaming experience like it. I guarantee you.

Once you've done that, get Opposing Force (very good) and Blue Shift (not bad). But ONLY after you have finished Half Life normally.

    Have fun.

Half-Life is far better than most FPSs, because it has so many memorable moments. There are parts that will stay with you for years, and most FPSs will seem just a bit less original after playing it.

Opposing Force is amazing too, although a lot harder, I found. But that has some great moments too. I hope we get to find out more about Adrian Shepherd (the star) in a HL2 expansion.

Blue Shift is alright. It would be good to play it before Half-Life 2, since the character in that features in the sequal.

Additionally, once you finish the original campaign, there are loads of mods out there to try.

As Shrikant mentioned, Planet Half-Life should have most of the good ones.

Might get flamed for saying that, but...I actually couldn't stomach the game. It somehow didn't draw me in at all. It had very good graphics for the time, and some sequences were pretty creative (I remember I had a hard time getting rid of the giant tentacle monser), but overall I felt there was nothing really new or great about the game. And about halfway through I got bored, and had to drag myself towards the end. It also had one of the most unsatisfying endings I've seen in a game (even for an FPS).

Your mileage may (and will) vary.

I agree with Ziad. Half-Life is probably the most overrated game. The only thing good with it is the mod The Specialist, and even then, only RP.

I don't like the original HL really... Opposing Force is great though, IMHO.

The original Half Life hailed the next generation of FPS when it was released about 6 years ago. It's difficult to say how good it is now compared with all the other FPS on the market.
I really enjoyed it - but I reckon you'd be better off buying the half life 2 gold edition which entitles you to the original Half Life for free. I think you probably have to download this - through steam(ing pile of sh*t - this could be a real pain) . Some people might not like it - but it would be interesting to see wether they can reccommend another FPS from the same time of this calibre?

I only ever liked the first game, Half Life for the Counterstrike mod.

Half Life 2 was great in the beginning, but then once the novelty wore off, it became really boring.

    Question:

Does anyone know if a there is a mod for either HL HL2 that eliminates the amount of ammo you can carry. So not an unlimited ammo mod but a mod that will make you carry 100 magnum casings.
