My son has run into a problem and needs some help. Not too much - just enough:

I have encountered a problem, involving Valygar. I have turned against the Cowled Wizards, and let Valygar join me. I entered the sphere, and the only entrance, the one I came through, has been locked. I have found my way to two Cowled Wizards which I can’t defeat. Does anyone know how to kill them? Because I can’t manage to touch either one of them.

Hmm, you could send in a thief or a ranger to have a brief look and then cast cloudkill & chaos. That´s all right since you know they are hostile after meeting them in the government building. That should keep them busy for a while.
After letting them bleed for a while rush in when the cloud disappears, cast insect plague and breach on the bastards and open fire on them. It worked for me.

[IMG] These guys can be royal pains in the rear! The one to the right is just an apprentice but he conjures help, I always go after him first with only half my party (the most magic resistant half, preferably fighters) because while they are stopping that fool from conjuring help, the other mage is sitting there with his protections and casting Horrid Wilting on your guys that are attacking the apprentice. So the other half of your party especially mages, should be dispelling the protections on Tolgerias, the head wizard. By the time you kill the apprentice send your fighters to finish Tolgerias off who should not have any protections left if your mages use breach, secret word, spell thrust, etc. on him. This is a more direct attack if the chaos/cloudkill isn't working for you. You can conjure some help too, and send it to Tolgerias to keep him busy while you kill the apprentice.

    SPOILER:
If you pickpocket Tolgerias while in Athkatla, you'll get a nice Ring of Ram. But, the same ring will be on him in Plannar Sphere afterwards. So, you'll end up with two of these. :D

Breach works on them, but ye be needing more than one.
Tolgerias has I think 2 contigencies, first -
at Enemy sighted which protects him full time
(Improved mantle will fade in 4 rounds, so keep yerself alive for that time) and his second burst is at 10% HP me thought's (IIRC same effect as first).
Two breaches shall help, so will spell immunity/evocation on yer mages and death ward (he casts horrid wilting) on as many of yer people as possible
    '
    '
    '
Of course there is a 'CHEAP WAY'
    Ring of human influence
Hide in shadows and charm him, then cast finger of death/power word stun on himself
    :) :) :)

A very nice way to defeating them is Insect Plague.

If you don't have it, you may use Flail of Ages, Stonefire Axe, or some Club or Spear with additional damage.

This aditional damage will get through the stoneskin and help is spell disrupting.

If you have Keldorn just cast Dispel Magic a couple times and then kick their butt with fighters.

Valygar's armor and Belt of Inertial Barrier give good protection agains Magic Damage (Horrid Wilting is the one I mean), so move chars equipped with those to the front.

Just backstab tolgairs (sp?). The other mage just casts summoning spells, and is easy. However i do not recommend fighting ANY mages befaure learning the breach spell and the ruby ray of reversal (you'll need that later)

[IMG] Thanks for everyone's help (not mine you understand - I have not got to the Sphere yet). It seemed the advice worked, but now he's even deeper in the s**t.

    Here is his next problem:

Once again I have encountered a problem involving Valygar and the sphere. I managed to get past Tolgerais and kill the evil spirit of the necromancer, but I am stuck, because I can't kill any of the daemons, they 'death stare' my players, and freeze them, and I never manage to touch them. If anyone could help I would be grateful.

they are tough but i was able to beat them with only my sorcerer and Viconia. Use some summoning spells to keep it/them occupied and then cast holy smite if you got a cleric. Otherwise summon things throw spells run. more spells and they will die eventually.
When i met them with my fighter dominated party i didnt have any problem at all. I even went looking for the "real" demon cause my fighters pounded them to death so fast. But i did that quest fairly late then so i had pretty high level.

Having the luck to play a cavalier - actually specialised in fighting deamons it was pretty easy for me.

However, I had some problems when playing my fighter-thiefs and fighter-mages there too. I usually use a melee fighter against deamons. Keldorn´s family armor, as good as a field plate +1 (?!), gives him immunity to hold. One of the shortswords has that feature too - that could be nice for Mazzy. Otherwise, you should try cfree movement (a lvl-4 cleric spell IIRC) on your frontline fighter - that should work fine.

I remommend a tank in front to deal with the beast and ranged weapon fighters and mages behind firing spells and missiles at it. With this tactic I was pretty successful in the game.

When your tank is hasted or has boots of speed, you can use the "guard" functions to make your ranged weapon fighters wait for the enemy .... the you just have to go to your enemies (don´d go too far, just so that one or two enemies can see you), run away and make them follow you into your trap .... that way you can isolate your enemies and kill them one by one :D

I used the staff of fire to summon a number of fire elementals as fodder while my other chars used spells and missile attacks.

    Yeah! Gibberling herder.

Ahh the planar sphere. I remember this one fondly from my first time through. My party was weak, having done only deArnise and portions of Umar beforehand. Tolgerias and his "friend" mopped the floor with us many times, but there was no alternative. Well, there was -- a *much* earlier save.

Sadly we were never able to beat him (or the demons later) without resorting to cheese tactics. I went back to the earlier save that game. Heh. We couldn't beat the demons even with extra cheese.

Go inside and cast insect plague. It's biggest advantage is that it goes through magical defences and completely prevents spellcasting, as well as there is a chance of panicking the target. With this spell alone you can defeat the two mages.

That is why I allways keep Jaheira in my party, as she is a druid.

before you face the demons you should make sure to get rid of anything else on the map or you get them fighting you at the same time.
i managed to kill the bastards by casting wave upon wave of summoning spells and protecting my party from charm.
