Perform skill 3.0

    In 3ed, how does perform exactly work. First off I know, usually, the skill is taken for an individual instrument rather then a category of instrument, but where I get confused is looking at my various 3.0 books (I don't have 3.0 PHB, only the MM of the 3.0 core set) and seeing things like:

    Elminster Perform (dance) +6

    Storm Silverhand Perform (dance, sing harp, lyre) +16

    Levistus Perform +42

    Okay, Elminster makes sense to me. Is Storm Silverhand taking dance, sing, harp and lyre as one skill? And what the Hell (quite literally for the Arch Duke) is going on with Levistus' perform skill? Why does he have just Perform as opposed to Perform (electric guitar) or something? I've never used Perform under the 3.0 rules (because apparently barbarians where too much fun).

    It must be taken taken for each desired medium of performance, be it instruments, singing, dancing, oratory, telling jokes...

    For Storm Silverhand, I would read that as spending the points for each of the three listed abilities.

    AS for the arch duke of Hell, I look at it as a moot point. If my character were to come face to face with him, I'd probably start rolling a new character anyway...

    Stat blocks in DND (especially the NPC statblocks) often have errors in them. A general perform check, instead of a specified (like, flute or dance for example) looks like just that, an error, since it should be specified.

    I think the more interesting question is... why does the Arch Duke of Hell have so many ranks in perform? :p How does that fit with his job description.

    Oh god, I just got a mental picture of satan in a tutu (ranks is 'ballet') :D
