BG2 was great but who else preferred BG1?

I thought that most of the subplots here in BG2 were more intricate because each subplot made you complete Another subplot within it, before you could complete it. okay i said it badly. An example would be the illithium for sir sarles, you had to go thru 2 people before going to neb and completing the quest. Most of the quests were set up like this. But in overall story I would have to say BG1 was the winner, there were also MUCH more areas to explore. Irenicus was also a pushover and a corny villain. All my friends kept saying how hard he was and how they had to just run away until he exhausted his spells. In the first battle I just cast Khelben's warding whip and slayer changed then it was over. In the Final battle, I took all his guys down within the first or second round then I cast khelben's warding whip twice then slayer changed and whacked him again. Nobody in my party even died. It took WAY more than tactics like these to kill Sarevok in Part one, and his allies were way harder too. I'm not complaining or anything but I just wanted to know how many other people preferred BG1 too.

well i like the fact that a lot of the old chars was back in the second installment. I t gave it the extra bit it needed. But i did like the fact in bg1 that you had a hell of alot more to explore and a little bit more quests. but in bg2 you just had random encounters along the way and that was as much as you had to go between cities.

I prefer BG2. You said that Sarevoks allies in the last battle of BG1 were hard to kill, but I you just walked up there with one chareacter, then that mage(forgot his name) used a cloud kill and then they where all dead(except for Sarevok). Every time I played BG1 that tactic worked perfectly

I'm in complete agreement that BG1 is better than BG2 in terms of a fun ropleplaying game although I concede that BG2 has some technical improvements. For a previous quite detailed discussion on this, have a look at my earlier post:

To my modest opinion, BG1 was great.
Then happened Planescape Torment. And I simply found it irresistable.
Then was Icewind Dale just to kick Diablo from hack and slash throne.
And then, I expected more from BG2. It is not bad game, it IS better than BG1. But something is missing. If you played PT you could feel that everyting in that game has it's place and purpose. In BG2 there are many things linked to nothing of importance for the game itself.

Conclusion, I'll probably uninstall BG2 without regrets. PT stays put.

Ive said this before and ill say it again, I liked how bg1 progressed better, at the end of every chapter there was a rather hard boss and his minions for your level (unless you imported) and bg2 lacked that with the exception of the last 2 chapters, it was really nice to look foward to those battles.

Class-specific weapons take away some freedoms. Paladins, for example, would be foolish to specialize outside of the two-handed sword and two-handed weapon proficiencies. Nor is it appealing to have a cleric specialized in something other than a hammer because of the Crom Fayer. There aren't many good bastard swords.

Plot specific NPC's, (Imoen in particular), kinda ruin the game. If they're not taking up space in your party, their absences leave big holes in the plot.

Acknowledging the balance, I'll say that most of the kits were cool, and the NPC interaction was good. I also liked alot of the new weapons/armour/items.

    BG1 was WAY better...IMHO...

I miss wandering around wilderness areas, killing the odd hobgoblin and encountering the odd quest. BG2 promised more areas to explore, so am I missing something, or what?

I think the major fault in BG2 was the fact that you had to spend six(?) chapters chasing after Imoen, and afterwards probably not taking her into your party anyway.

Puts a whole new meaning to 'sibling rivalry'...

I agree with the wandering around aimlessly -it was much more fun - and in BG2 you could hardly go to a new area without previously getting a quest first. But - i still think BG2 was better - THere wer lots of tough battles if you know where to look - Kangaxx, The rogue stone area, the dragons. On the whole there was a hard fight at the end of most of the chapters in BG - but in BG2 there were lots morhard fights - even if not part of the main plot. However there were too many magical weapons n BG2 - it seemed like every single enemy you killed at something which would have been damn good in BG. Overall I prefred BG2 - but there were lots of elements missing that had appeared in BG.

[IMG] Yeah, Imiss the wandering. In BG2 there's a touch of IWD actually. Everything is quested and I feel like I'm just completing tasks, instead of exploring and seeing what happens...

[IMG] We never said it didn't bud. What we DID say, was that BG1 kicks IT'S ass :D hehe. It's true anyways. In terms of graphics and stuff, BG2 is better, no shinola sherlock. :D Technology advancements but I meant, storywise and characterwise and "freedomwise" are there such words as these anymore haha :)
Yeah ork, you hit it right on the money.

I have not played baldurs gate 1 but am gonna buy it since you all think its as good or even better then baldurs gate 2.I am tired of people saying icewind dale beats diablo 2 for hack and slash because diablo 2 is THE BEST hack and slash there is and icewind dale is just baldurs gate 2 with more combat and less story.

[IMG] I've never played Diablo 2, but if some say its better than IWD it must be good. As I've said on every board in the world (except for this one) I will say it here I guess. IWD was the best produced CRPG I've ever seen.I haven't seen them all by any means, so put it in context. But music, art, voice acting, graphics and general world depiction and fleshing out is the best. It was great to play, to listen to, to look at and so on. Plus, you get to make a complete party based on D&D rules and experiment. Great enemies, great EXP, it was awesome. Playing that game was probably the most fun I've ever had by myself. BG2 is cool, though. I'm digging it so far. I've got a lot to do before CH 4 though, my ship awaits...
